Exactly What Is WRONG With The Beauty Queens From Kisii County? Meet Mercy Mokeira,One Of Gusiiland’s Unlikely Beauty Queens. But Is She Really Ugly?

Last week, one beauty pageant winner dominated the headlines, even getting featured (for the first time) on magazines and prime TV shows. All the brouhaha wasn’t brought about by her impeccably manicured beauty and fashion sense as an ambassador of beauty but by her rather shoddy, unkempt and drab sense of style. And bad hair. And even worse shoes.

Miss Kisii County looked like she needed a quick shower. And a desperate wardrobe change. She became an overnight laughing stock with many questioning how a girl that looked so unpresentable ended up bagging the crown for the Most Dazzling Woman In Kisii. But it’s Kisii anyway. And we weren’t that surprised.

She wore the type of dress you wouldn’t want your enemies to be wearing. And her hair looked like something straight out a bad Nigerian movie. Standing there, with an awkward smile and tacky pose,Cindy Kemunto looked like a character from a poorly-directed Ghanaian Occult movie.

And yet she was the Queen of the County. It baffled many.

But Cindy is not the first beauty queen who baffled the World for her not-so-beautiful features and sense of style. We’d seen Miss Kakamega come and go. Looking like the unschooled daughter of a village witch. And further ashore,Miss Uganda. Looking like the Nation’s Opposition Leader.

And now yesterday, yet another Beauty Queen became the topic of a heated conversation across Social Media after a rather unflattering photo of her and her fellow Pageant winner floated on the Internet.

Mercy Mokeira, the reigning Miss World Kenya Nyamira County was photographed standing next to her Siaya County counterpart flanked by two beautiful lightskin female prisoners on either side.

Kenyan netizens, never a lot to let a good trollfest go unexploited, descended onto the photo making all manner of crude and rude comments about the foursome, comparing the two female inmates to the ‘Beauty Queens’ and some even suggesting that the inmates should swap places with the rather drab-looking Beauty Queens.

Even before the dust had settled on the Miss Kisii snafu, yet another Kisii beauty queen was wading into yet another vile,Internet attack.

But what is it about the Kisii Beauty Queens that has made them such an easy target of vitriol and Twitter bashing? Why aren’t the good girls of Kisii, who’ve had the fortune of ascending to the highest seat of glamor, just living up to society’s expectation of them?

But even before we bash them,do we even know who they actually are?

Well,Mercy Mokeria is not just the current Miss Nyamira County but is also the reigning Miss Tourism Peace and has also done shows in Rwanda and Uganda, modeling and catwalking in front of hundreds of foreigners. And yet, she doesn’t get it.

Mercy on the International catwalk and on a professional photoshoot.

Even with all that exposure, all that traveling and carrying more than one Beauty Title on her head,Mercy is yet to satisfy Kenyans and justify her crowns.

Even at Skyluxx Lounge, where an excited Mercy posed for a photo with ex-Nairobi Diaries star Vera Sidika, she still locked horrendous. And soon as they photo hit the Internet,Mercy was once again dragged for her messy, hideous hair, shoddy countenance and a scary smile that looked like the scar of a wounded veteran in Iraq.

But this young woman, who started modeling back in 2012,is still struggling to shake off the taunts and cyber attacks, four years after she entered the glamorous industry.

Interestingly,Mercy, who also is a law graduate from the UON, seems unable and unaffected by the nastiness exemplified on the Internet. And,despite the jeers and the foul remarks,Mercy still courageously stands tall. Shrugging off all of the negativity and, remarkably, walking even taller than she ever did.

‘For those hating on Miss Kenya or any other title holder,F**K YOU all!! What have you done? You don’t find
us beautiful? Well, those are your opinions! Sit on them and spin around!!! Black is beauty! ‘ Mercy hisses.

And despite the fact that the Internet is yet to understand how she bagged the title, and who keeps crowning her,Mercy still remains a very sought after public personality and is currently hosting the very successful  Fashion Night at Club Hypnotica every Tuesday and has also been surprisingly nominated for KUSA Awards Outstanding Model of the Year.

Still,Twitter is confused. And unconvinced.

But the good girls in Kisii still keep losing. The Internet is still very viciously unforgiving and unaccepting of them.

To some, these girls desperately need to find a new stylist. Terribly need to hit the salon afresh. Badly need to overhaul their entire wardrobe and urgently need to find better photographers.

Either that or Kisii County should stop producing these sort of third-rate,beneath beautiful,disaster-looking scraggly girls and bestowing Beauty Crowns on them.

Or maybe the rules of beauty changed ages ago. And we’re still here stuck in the past, imagining that anyone who is called ‘Miss This and That’ MUST at least be attractive to the eye, have some fashion sense, dress like a princess, have fabulous hair and smile like a pro.

Too bad. That changed long time ago.

Now we are stuck with dark-skinned scrawny skunks masquerading as Beauty Queens. Girls who can’t dress the part. Look the part. Smile the part or even play the part.

But for Mercy Mokeira, who is quickly rising up the social ladder, even wining and dining with eminent political royalties,no publicity is bad publicity.

She’s been vilified. And come out stronger.

And when I ask if she’s seeing someone,Mercy is emphatic.

‘Oh yes! Why?! ‘ she quips, excitedly.’ Or do you want me? ‘.

She’s dating some white guy. A tycoon on his own right. And for now, nothing can stop her tide. Not even a barrage of catty remarks from a disgruntled Twitterati.

But even with all the negativity, one thing stand out; Mercy’s undeniable attractiveness, rich smile, blithe body, supermodel poise and bombastic mien. She stays winning…Amid the drags and the catcalls and the bitchiness.

Which is what,if you ask US Television mogul Tyra Banks, models are made of.

Beauty. And the Best.
