I’m Happy To Be A Role Model – Wiyaala

Songstress Wiyaala has revealed how happy she is being a role model to girls especially

those from her village in the Upper West Region.

Wiyaala who sings in her native Waala and Sissala dialects as well as English relishes

being seen as a role model by young girls from her village who look up to her for inspiration.

In an interview with UK’s Skynews last week where she touched on a number of issues including

how she is using music to shape lives, the ‘Rock My Body’ singer said she is very happy young

girls from her village see her as a role model and are inspired by her works.

“I’m happy to be a role model because when I started, I didn’t say I want to be a role model, it just happened.

“Besides, being one out of the thousand children from my village and becoming very popular has inspired others.

“They see you on TV in another country or continent and get excited and ask ‘how did you do it?’ I’m happy they see what I’m doing and are inspired by it,” she said.

As a baptised Catholic, Wiyaala disclosed that she nurtured her singing abilities as a

member of the church’s choir in her village where she grew up.

“You know, as kids, we used to drum and also perform for people and that experience also helped me a lot with my stagecraft” she added.

There is no doubt that the Afro-pop musician, Wiyaala is one of the talented female artistes

in the industry but to the Sisaala singer, she’s not appreciated by the system in Ghana.

She has ever said the lack of appreciation for her style of music in the country pushed her

out to ply her on the international scene.

In an interview she granted early this year, Wiyaala said the unfair treatment of the ‘system’ has

pushed her to take her music trade outside the country where people value her talent and style.

“I won Female Vocalist of the Year 2015 at the Ghana Music Awards but is that all I deserve? I think I’m worth more than that,” Wiyaala nicknamed ‘The Lioness of Africa’ said at the time.

She is one of Ghana’s talented Afro-Pop singers putting the nation on the map through her authentic music.
