KNUST Female Students Invent Sanitation App For Proper Waste Disposal

Two outstanding students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have emerged winners of the Girl Code Project by MTN in Kumasi after developing a ground breaking waste management application.

Doreenda Nikoi Kotei Sika, an Electrical Engineering student and Agyirakwa Monney Bernice, a Computer Science student both of KNUST won the competition with their application, which would be fitted into waste bins to direct the proper disposal of waste.

The MTN Girl Code Project in Kumasi was a five-day boot camp tailored to build the potential of young women in coding and direct their potentials into businesses that tackle the problems of the community. Most of the solutions centered on women related problems like breast cancer, kayayei(head potters), food and sanitation.

The winners of the competition plan to collaborate with sanitation agencies across the country to manufacture their module waste bins in primary and junior high schools. They also called on Government to support such ideas in its bid to keep the country clean.

A facilitator and Ghana Chapter Lead for Women in Tech-Africa, Selasi Dzikunu expressed delight at the partnership between her outfit and MTN-Ghana. She said this had afforded the ladies the opportunity to develop modern applications to address needs on the market.

Data and Channel Manager for MTN- Ghana in charge of the Northern Business District, Steven Asare urged Ghanaian women to take particular interest in the study of science and technology.

According to him, there is a lot to accomplish if women pursue courses in the area of science and technology. The two students(winners) have pleaded with government to invest in their innovation to produce more of the product.
