Are Kenyan gospel musicians asleep?

I honestly feel like Kenyan gospel musicians are deep in slumber. I’m saying this because I feel that the gospel industry is not as vibrant as it was a few years ago. I feel like it has stagnated.

If you are an avid fan of Kenyan music then I’m sure you remember how the gospel industry was big five to ten years ago. Can you?

The gospel industry was so enormous so much so that secular artists were almost unheard of, no one even cared about them or what they were up.

The biggest song in the country at any given time was from the likes of DK Kwenye Beat, Juliani, Willy Paul, M.O.G, Benachi, Daddy Owen, Bahati, Gloria Muliro, Eunice Njeri, Mercy Masika etc.

I don’t know what happened but somewhere along the way, the secular industry overtook took over. We can debate about this until the come home but deep down you also know that this is a fact.

The gospel music is not what it was five to ten years and this begs begs the question, are Kenyan gospel musicians asleep, did they get too comfortable or are they just lazy?

I know it’s not a competition between the two sides. After all, they are all Kenyan. As a Christian, it just gives me comfort when the gospel industry is at the top.

Don’t get me wrong, I listen to a lot of secular music. Yup! From Sauti Sol to Ethic, anything goes. I have nothing against secular musicians.

It’s just I really miss that days when gospel music was the order of the day. Those days when gospel gigs had the biggest crowds. The days when gospel musicians were really praising God with music.

This is a clarion call to all Kenyan gospel musicians. Enough said!

  1. Secular music on top, that’s how it should be.

  2. My friend, what you are terming as gospel cannot even qualify to be called gospel. As a christian what can willy Paul preach to you? You are all lost. Matthew says GOD wants true worshippers who Will worship HIM in truth and spirit. Is the Holy spirit in those songs? Definately NO!

I think this so called so called “gospel music” has gone the Galatian way – those who began in the spirit and ended up in the flesh! (Gal 3:3) I suppose the former singers had a spiritual mission, you know the likes of Agnes Masika, John Deus, and many others of the former generation – I don’t claim they were perfect. Today the real mission appears to be totally forgotten! We have gimicks wholesale, anything to tickle crowds, put on a show and make a kill. We need to stop self promotion gimicks and humble ourselves before God.As the Bible says:
For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
      Matthew 23:12 NIV

  3. Motherfuckers who mention Willy Paul in every shit irk me. Akina Kamene Goro and group. Gospel music’s full of noice.. you wonder why Poze ditched you! Same old shit no creativity boring dance styles that’s why I didn’t vote for any dickhead on Groove. Next time before judging what a niggah like Poze’s doing ask yourself is he your father?? If he’s not go shag yourself elsewhere.

By the way.. Where’s mtoto wa mama?? Oh niggah’s still on viagra trying to please his cougar. No disrespect but fake fans destroyed him. ALL HIS FANS ARE PLASTIC! They ditched him like a bad rash in the arse. Next time watch your mouth trynna throw shade at Saldido’s C.E.O … BOOMERANGG!
Kila mtu apambane na hali yake.
    Mavi ya kale hayanuki,
    Maskini akipata… Matako hulia mbwata!

Our spirituality will determine what we give to the world. If Jesus is not in someone’s life that singer has nothing to offer! Let them go back to the root of our effectiveness in ministry.

  4. Of all those pple you have mentioned, Eunice Njeri is not asleep, she actually just had a concert at our church, ICC NAIROBI and released a new album… That’s NOT being asleep..

    JUST SAYIN😄😄😄

  5. I don’t know any gospel album… And I’M sure most of us can’t mention any. It went from
Gospel ministry to Gospel Industry that’s why artists like @Size8Reborn , @AmaniKenya @Warda , @BambooKenya , @WahuKagwi @CannibalKenya …..crossed to gospel chasing clout and trying to mint money out of it only for the whole skeam to crumble. For artists like @BahatiKenya A.K.A Mtoto wa Shosh, @HopeKidd A.K.A R. Kelly, Daudi Kabaka or @DKKwenyeBeat A.K.A Decay Kwenye Meat, @RingtoneApoko A.K.A KilimaniMom and group transformed to Slay Kings, Socialites, Toyboys and Perverts.
What a shame! Hawa ndiyo watu mnategemea!?? Female gospel artists are doing low paying shows but are still so grounded.
    Smh!!!

Gospel music is not dead do your research, there is an upcoming gospel hip hop mixtape, artists are releasing songs almost daily you focus so much on the gospel artists who are long gone and out of fashion, secondly you cant compare gospel music with secular music, you cant mention lamba lolo and put it in comparison to gospel music, secular music has never been on top gospel music has always been on top we were the first ones with the best video quality in Kenya, we have the biggest award show in east and africa, do your research and look for new upcoming talent instead of focusing on gospel artists who have become old fashioned

  6. an sorry to say thiz but willy poze he is very confused coz there is no way u can start singing gospel and then go to secular, what is that? that is being a hippocyte,

  7. I think the guy trying to explain how the crazy crowd used to attend this kind of shows for this so called gospel singers who were building foundation striving to fame ten years ago now where are they pockets are fat now.
