2015 Mandera bus attack which Muslims shielded Christians from Al-Shabab militants was played in a fictional film adaptation that focuses on religious integration and coexistence.
On that fateful day, Al-shabaab gunmen sprayed the bus with bullets killing two passengers. But when they asked the 62 Muslims to identify the Christian passengers, the Muslims refused telling the militants to kill everyone or leave.
A short film about the Mandera bus attack – ‘Watu Wote’ has since became the first Kenyan film to win the Student Oscars. The film was produced in 2016 as the graduation film of the Hamburg Media School master class program.
Katja Benrath of Hamburg Media School won in the student narrative category of the Student Oscars and now ‘Watu Wote’ can be submitted to the main Oscars for next year.
