Kenyan Dancehall Musicians are selfish

I did a piece on how dancehall artists  are not appreciated especially in Kenya. Well, for this I must say maybe it’s because they are selfish.

Looks harsh, but look at it this way. How big is dancehall music in Kenya? How many upcoming dancehall artists do we know? For those that we know, how many have mentored upcoming dancehall musicians?

Get my point??As a country we are still trying to identify a sound that resonates with many when  it comes to music.

However, dancehall artists in my opinion are leaving out the younger generation when it comes to this kind of genre.

So far, with what I  have observed many dancehall lovers are at ‘let’s throw it back mood ‘ in most cases. I mean they keep replaying the  old dancehall music, yet am sure by now new age musicians if taken by hand and guided could work something out for the fans.

Old and New music

The olden day music was good while it lasted but new age groups deserve new age music. The regular secular music scene is enjoying the songs of new age artists or groupies like Ethic, Ochungulo family among many others that are thriving on the Wamlambez and wamnyonyez anthems.

Clearly something is lurking in this genre music. Had the veteran musicians in the said genre taken up the initiative of not just growing their  brand and have mentored new dancehall artists I believe as a country we would be selling internationally just like Jamaica.

Well, Jamaica is believed to be the pace setters when it comes to dancehall but our music scene was also thriving with basement music. Nowadays it’s a selective mood of dancehall music even in the clubs that used to have dancehall nights.

Today we only boast of three dancehall artists that were famous years back. We need to reach out more to upcoming dancehall music makers .This is the only way this genre will get back on track and musicians should like Redsan can get the ratings he deserves.
