Kisumu violence that nearly resulted to the deaths of dozen women caused by misinformation on social media

Chaos erupted in the lakeside city of Kisumu after youth were misled to believe women congregating at Jumuia hotel were selling their ID cards to people who organized the meeting.

A group of youths stormed Jumuia Hotel after word went round on social media that IDs were being bought from the women.

Apparently the meeting was an interfaith summit for women in Kisumu to take stock of Gender Based Violence witnessed in the recent political skirmishes.

About 150 women were in attendance when youth stormed in to cause chaos. The rowdy youth brought down the perimeter wall of the hotel and destroyed property before police were brought in to intervene.

The women were ferried to safety in police lorries as the youth barricaded roads, lit bonfires and engaged the police in running battles
