Konkodi is Kenya’s most versatile and talented rapper

His name is Konkodi and after you read through my argument, you will understand why that is a name I feel you really need to become acquainted with.

Kenya doesn’t have a dearth of rappers and a lot of them are actually pretty talented. However, for some reason, Konkodi doesn’t get the props he deserves and yet very few rappers can hold a candle to him.

The guy is currently under the Decimal Records banner which is run by both veteran producer Musyoka and P-Unit member Bon-Eye and he has had both the advantage of having mentors and great production work. So whenever he gets on a song you already know the instrumentals will not be the issue.

On the path to success! Former shisha seller who was spotted by P Unit’s Bon Eye releases first solo. And it’s dope

And add that to his greatest asset: his melodic and harmonic awareness. Konkodi can get on the most eclectic beats and make it work for them when he is rapping because he knows how to ride a beat. His style changes ever so subtly when he is on different songs and as a result, every flow seems different.

So as you can imagine, a guy from Eastlands is rappi9ng about his experiences growing up and representing his hood on a track with some decidedly world focused beats such as on his jam Gaza.

And then on the next track, say Drinks an Mayenx, he completely;y strips down his rapping to the bare-essentials of blowing your mind with his lyrical prowess, making sheng sound cool.

And even when he does collabos with Konkodi label mates, his style of rapping pretty much stands out as no one else can copy his delivery and flow. Notice till now we haven’t even gone into his lyricism and that is because for once with a Kenyan rapper other than Khaligraph jones, we can personify his flow and cadence even as he raps.

The best example of where the lyricism is onBone-Eye’s track Control. In the first verse, Konkodi and Bon-Eye take turns spitting their lines in an almost conversational way. His lyrics are hilarious and fun and allow themselves to feed Bon-Eye’s braggadocio without having to kowtow to his mentor.

Wapi permit ya kubeba hii mzigo? Hii lorry haiskiagi mashimo/ kifo cha mende, kombamwiko/ Afande, AI! Kanataka fimbo!
ROGER THAT! (Bon-Eye starts his part here)
Look fit, nafeel fiti/ Ni yule boys fisi amevaa suti/ Ati yule mode anaride na masterpiece

Simple lyrics on that one yet the way they are delivered is flames.

We really need to stop sleeping on the talent!
