Love brewed on Facebook turned sour for 26-year-old Lydia Nyaboke Onano who was killed on her first date after she received a call from another man who was referring to her as ‘sweetie’.

The deceased left her house in Ngara where she stayed with her younger brother on July 23rd and travelled to Ngong to meet Richard Nyakina for a date with him.

Lydia’s brother Japheth Onono who is a second-year electrical engineering student at Technical University of Kenya, went to Pangani Police Station to report that his sister was missing three days after she went for the date in Ngong. The police advised him to report in Ngong where his sister communicated from last.

Detectives from Special Crimes Prevention Unit called Japheth on Friday August 18th to confirm the worst, his sister was found dead. The police said they had arrested a suspect who had owned up to murdering his sister and dumping her body in Ngong forest, near Lenana School.

Lydia’s date, Richard Nyakina, was the one who killed her on that fateful July 23rd, he told police that he killed Lydia because she was cheating on him.

Apparently Lydia received a call from another man who was referring to her as ‘sweetie’ and when Richard demanding to know who the caller was, an argument ensued.

Richard hit Lydia on the head and later used her bra, blouse and shoe laces to strangle her to death before dumping her body in Ngong near Lenana School. Richard took Lydia’s phone and sold it to a Form Four student before he fled to Gucha, Kisii County.

Police managed to trace Richard in Gucha and arrested him, they traced Lydia’s phone to the student who then took them to a barbershop where they found Richard.

A postmortem conducted on Lydia’s body at City Mortuary confirmed Richard’s confession; the deceased had indeed died from strangulation.

Lydia will be laid to rest this Friday August 25th at his home Mabariri-Monga village near Monga Primary school in Nyamira County.
