“Big” Ted Kwaka discusses his divorce

Kenya’s consul general in Los Angeles, Thomas Kwaka, also referred to as Big Ted, has shared personal details about his failed marriage to his divorced wife, Cynthia Akoth. In a recent interview, Ted discussed parenthood and the challenges of getting married again with the Iko Nini podcast.

Big Ted revealed information about his two teenage daughters, whom he would want keep private. As a devoted “girl dad,” he conveyed the happiness and satisfaction he gets from being a parent.
Even though he is well-known, he honors his daughters’ desire to stay unknown, saying:

“Mbaya cover by Nimewapiga. You won’t be able to locate them even if you Google them (I have entirely protected them). These kids have me as their slave. I’m unable to refuse them. They are aware of this. “What do you need? No, no, no, I’ll give it to you today,” I said.

Thinking back to his last marriage, Big Ted explained that it ended because of a change in priorities rather than problems at work or with money.

“Both she and I were headed in opposite directions. Nijaribu hizo mbili zishikane na sikutake time. (I didn’t spend the time connecting the two of us.) Then, at that moment, we were in separate locations. In spite of the difficulties, he stays in regular contact with his girls and keeps putting their welfare first.”

Speaking about getting married again, Big Ted laughed and said he was married to five important women at the moment. Though he kept a humorous outlook on the situation, he acknowledged the difficulties of managing three relationships in his life: father, husband, and baby father.

“Hao madame, you are extremely special. In truth, I am saa hii because I remarried. My mistake was marrying five different ladies. By the way, hio ni ngori. What makes you pick what kind of attitude you have, machozi tu brathe?(I have so much love for all those women in my life. I have five ladies in my life because I remarried. Should they all choose to act rudely toward you, you will really cry tears.)

Big Ted emphasized that divorce is not final and that it is important to live and learn.

“Divorce is not final, but I’d rather you go back to your parents with your suitcase than go back to your parents in a suitcase,” he said as he ended the conversation.

Big Ted moved to the US and is now serving as the Consul General of Los Angeles, thus he is visiting the nation for a vacation.

Many of us have good things that we are about to mess up, great destinies that God knows if he gives you now you shall definitely screw it up.. Great careers that God needs you to be mentored in great discoveries and ideas beyond their time but he also wants to prepare you for where he is taking you…”

Big Ted finally sheds weight after gastric bypass surgery in India

Dieting and extreme physical exercises didn’t help Big Ted lose weight, the Deputy Director in charge of State branding and events almost lost hope about losing weight until he was informed about bariatric surgery.

Big Ted’s life took a new turn when he met Dr. Mohit Bhandari through a mutual friend while on a visit to Kenya. Speaking Sunday Magazine, Big Ted revealed that it was the Indian doctor who encouraged him to go for a bariatric surgery to shed weight.

Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery). Bariatric surgery procedures are gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. [sic].

“I was fortunate to meet Dr Mohit Bhandari through a mutual friend while on a visit to Kenya. The renowned doctor who has performed over 7,000 bariatric surgeries and over 500 robotic surgeries suggested that he would help me lose weight. Naturally, I was very skeptical since I had tried it before but nevertheless agreed to go to India on his invitation for a gastric bypass, a non invasive procedure that ‘reduces’ the size of your stomach,” Big Ted said in part.

Ted disclosed that the whole procedure cost him Kes 700,000. He revealed that he lost 5kg within four days after he went under the knife.

“When I got to the Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics Centre in India, I was impressed by the facility. It had a 7,000 student college and a 2,500 bed capacity. Having never stayed at a hospital before, I was very apprehensive. I remember asking the doctor what to expect when the anaesthesia was administered. He just told me to breathe in and the next time I came to, I was in the recovery room. The procedure that would help me shed weight was complete and I literally felt like a brand new person. For about Kes 700, 000, which included airfare, accommodation and the gastric bypass, I had finally won the weight loss battle. Within four days I had lost five kilos and I confidently felt my success journey had began and I was ready to come back home,” Big Ted stated.

The Deputy Director in charge of State branding and events also opened up about the challenges of being overweight. Ted recounted incidents where he was terribly embarrassed thanks to his weight.

“My weight gain was slowly becoming a nightmare. I tried working out but to no avail. I must have tried every diet there is around. The kilos kept piling up and my suits were a humongous size 68! Obesity comes with many challenges. I could not get my size of any clothing item at the shops not to mention I had had enough of my share of embarrassing incidents. I remember once flying to Maasai Mara National Park and they had to use an extension safety belt since the regular one wasn’t enough for me. I also broke a chair at a friend’s wedding and it was so embarrassing when everyone turned to look at what was going on. However, I was fortunate since I did not experience any health challenges due to obesity. Big people problems are a reality. It is a big deal and it dents your self esteem. I have lost track of the number of big people, both men and women who have approached me for the secret to lose weight.”
