How Mwalimu Churchill molded Eric Omondi’s comedy career – Eric explains

We all have our pasts, ones that tested our patience but still saw us break through.

Now crowned the President of Comedy in Africa, Eric Omondi did not sprout to fame with a day’s work.

Recalling his early days, still green in the field of comedy, the funny man narrated how Godfather of comedy, Churchill discovered the talent in him but with much hustle.

Breakthrough

The two crossed paths in Daystar University, where Eric was hosting an event and Churchill was the guest of honor.

Since then, Eric’s life took a different turn. He shared his journey during Churchill Show’s Sunday episode.

I met Churchill in Daystar while I was hosting an event in which he was the guest of honor…He saw me, gave me a chance and the rest as the say is History…

Recalling that very day, Eric Omondi stated:

I was the emcee of the event and you (Churchill) took my number na ukaninyima yako. Ukasema ‘nitakupigia’ and you did after two years.

Despite the long wait, the day shone a bright light on his path and since then, Eric Omondi got nurtured in the arms of Mwalimu Churchill boasting today, as an International brand.

One of my best shows was the third one after Barack Obama won the US elections in 2008. I made a short clip of him and his family and also mimicking marathoner, Jelimo. After 2007 post-election skirmishes, 2008 was a great year that no Kenyan will ever forget.

For Eric Omondi, comedy was always his dream.

I wanted to do stand up comedy like Churchill, do clips like Redukylass and parodies like Kajairo.

The 42-year old funny man celebrates the day he brought his grandmother to the popular Churchill show, before her demise.

Roots

The stand-up comedian apparently started the art back in class five where he was the family’s entertainer.

Walking into University, Eric wanted to take up the art full-time but his mother was not for the idea, without completion of his studies.

However, the flourishing comedy act still advises parents to have children establish a firm education foundation first, before starting their careers.

Hollywood stunt gone wrong! Eric Omondi recalls most embarrassing moment

Everyone has had their lowest moment in their profession – one way or the other – and megastar, Eric Omondi is no exception.

The 42-year old comic defied all odds, scaling the heights to become Africa’s President of comedy but he has had his dark days as well.

In a Q&A session with fans online, a fan asked Eric about his worst experience on stage.

The stand-up comedian recalled how he tried to pull a Hollywood moment during the ‘Chaguo la Teeniez’ awards in 2010, only to be left high and dry.

He gave a shot to the kind of stunts drawn by Hollywood acts – coming down the stage from the roof top, only that his was a rope instead.

All was well until the rope got stuck, leaving him hanging mid-way for some 15 minutes.

Chaguo la teeniez 2010. So I tried to pull a Hollywood moment by coming down the stage from the roof on a rope, kamba ilikwama nikahung hapo 15 minutes????????…the embarrassment.

That stood as one of the most embarrassing moments for Eric in his comedy career.

He now boasts as a high-flying multi-millionaire, earnings majorly from the name he created through his comedy stunts.

Eric Omondi has bagged numerous International awards that see him stun International crowds, rub shoulders with star celebrities, land mega brand ambassadorial deals, attend myriad media interviews.. the list continues.
