Artist Spotlight: Bridget Blue, fast-rising songbird with a golden voice

I have always been a fan of Bridget Blue but to be honest, it was not until a few days ago while she was performing at the live concert that was organized by Decimal Records when it hit me that she is such a great vocalist.

The sad truth is that many artists use auto tune in their songs and you can never tell what they really sound like until you hear them performing during a live concert and in most cases, they do not live up to expectations.

Bridget Blue

But that isn’t the case with Bridget Blue. The sassy singer who is signed to Kaka Empire sounds so nice in person and after listening to her live performance, I am convinced that she is the best female vocalist in the country.

You might think I’m exaggerating but believe you me, she sounds really angelic and I do not think it’s something that you can tell if you listen to her recorded songs. Well, you kind of can but they don’t come close to listening to her live.

Bridget Blue

Bridget Blue has the potential to become the biggest female artist not only in Kenya but in the whole continent. With the right team behind her, this should be a walk in the park because she is a natural.

I believe she’s going places and maybe, just maybe she might be the first Kenyan artist to bag a Grammy because why not? Enough said.

Timmy Tdat is slowly bouncing back after committing career suicide

If you are keen, you must have noticed that Kenyan musician Timothy Owuor, popularly known as Timmy Tdat, has gotten his mojo back. He’s slowly bouncing back after committing career suicide.

The Welle Welle hitmaker was at the peak of his music career when he landed a radio gig in March last year. He had been handpicked to host a drive show on NRG Radio alongside Mwalimu Rachael. Perhaps he took up the job because he was getting a fat pay cheque, who knows?

Coincidentally, Timmy also broke ranks with Kaka Empire, the stable that he had been signed to for 5 years (or so), around the same time.

As fate would have it, his music career started suffering almost immediately. Although he kept releasing new songs, they were just flat. Okay, I’ll just say it as it is, the songs were boring. His punchlines were weak and not as witty as was the case in his older songs.

People who had come to admire him for his lyrical prowess, including yours truly, thought that was the end for him. He lost so many fans and it seemed like his career was over. He had hit a dead end!

Toward the end of last year, peharps after noticing that his music career had taken a nosedive, Timmy decided to call it quits at NRG Radio. His explanation was that he had to focus on his music. That’s it.

He got into studio and at the beginning of the year, he released a new song dubbed Atekwe alongside Redsan. Although the song didn’t do well, it was clear Timmy was keen on winning back his fans.

He went quiet for two months, perhaps to restrategize, and reappeared in April with a new song dubbed Kipopo that he had done alongside Tanzania’s Rosa Ree. Three weeks later, Rosa Ree dropped the remix of her hit Asante Baba featuring Timmy.

Both songs have been getting massive airplay on local radio stations. If you listen to either of them, you’ll admit that Timmy has gotten his mojo back. This is the Timmy that we all came to love and admire.

I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us. I also hope that he’s not thinking of going back to radio. Clearly, that was a big mistake.

King kaka merges with Cassidy for his new jam Far Away

King Kaka has merged with Cassidy an American rapper for Far Away. This comes after his recent single release dubbed Poison. The King of rap has been consistent in releasing music in the last few months. This is the second collabo in the last 2 months. He recently collaborated with Bridget Blue for Njia. Far Away has been directed by Hussein Njoroge and produced by Musyox.

Production

This jam is great. You all know how King Kaka does it. The video is in sync with the audio. It is great and the choice of the vixens is a great. The merger with an International rapper is enough evidence that Kaka’s is an international brand. The song is done in both Swahili and English giving it a great feel. Cassidy does not dissapoint, he adds taste to this song. This guy is also great in his lines. Just listen to it, you are going to fall in love. Cassidy also sings some words in Swahili and the American accent is clear.

The chorus was written by King Kaka and Brian Nadra and Performed by Brian Nadra.  Although Cassidy is not in the video, it still is a good jam.

Lyrical Presentation

The lyrics flow so well,  “Okey, jump on it(far far away) Wacha wasi wasi ma, already picked you Am verified pia, tick blue Wiki mzima bana, hapana buda make a killing Sai bana, hapana bana buda make a shilling Kama sio ganji tembea(tembeza) Sai kama flag napepea.” In this verse King Kaka talks of going far away and not to worry and it is all about making money and without it they should walk away.

King Kaka

Also there repetition inn this song; Like in the chorus far away is emphasized, bringing out the title of the song. The voice of Brian Nadra in it is just great. “Far, far away, jump on the way  Let it take you away(take you away) Far, far away, jump on the way  Let it take you away(take you away).”

“Am feeling like a star, today  Am a boss, today  Am drunk, am drunk a lot of alcohol, today   Smoke a can of marijuana out of the jar, today  Turn the blame, ride away and go far away  Am dancing with this brother, I gave a car today.” Cassidy in this stanza he talks about having fan far far away emphasizing the theme of the song.

The song is great and the duo gave it a good feel. I give it a rating of 6/10.

Femi One mocks Hopekid and DK Kwenye Beat in latest hit ‘Hiyo One’ (Video)

I have longed for the day when I could finally say that Kenya’s queen of rap Femi One is finally back. Ladies and gentlemen, that day is finally here! Femi One is back! You can tell that I’m excited as I write this, I’ll try and contain myself.

Allow me to jog your memories a bit. Do you remember how Femi One killed it on Pilau Njeri, Jah or the Ligi Soo (Remix)? These songs were released more than three years ago. This was when we could all agree that she was in her best element.

Somewhere along the way, she lost her mojo so much so that mediocre rappers such as Msupa S thought they could trade insults with her. Imagine the audacity! I digress.

Femi One

And no, no one has said that Femi One has not released any song in the last three years. She actually had a couple of songs. However, most of her fans, including yours truly, felt that she was just releasing music for the sake of it and not what we had known her for.

After being lost for so many years, Femi One is back to her roots or rather given us a reason to believe that she is still the badesst female rapper in the region.

A few days ago, she released a brand new hit dubbed Hiyo One and we can’t get enough of it. Everything about her new song is on point.

From the punchlines to the wordplay, to the beat, to the beat that was made by Kevin Provoke. Nothing is amiss about this song. For the first time in a long time, I really felt like Femi had lived up to her name as the queen of Kenyan rap.

Femi One

My favourite verse in this song has to be when she said “Fresh kama Tropical fresh Vs PK, I am so sick f*ck Hope kid DK,” I was literally on the floor when she dropped that line.

I listened to Hiyo One a couple of times while trying to understand the thought process behind it. I came to the conclusion that Femi One can never be dethroned. It’s never happening.

The video was directed by Ricky Bekko of Big Dreams Entertainment.

King Kaka speaks: Avril, Arrow Bwoy and other artists exited Kaka Empire label

Kaka Empire record label has recently seen part of its creation walk away: Avril, Arrow Bwoy and some speculations of Timmy T Dat.

Popular Kenyan singer and songwriter, Timmy T Dat

Uhmn…Timmy bado tunafanya management yake.

Arrow Bwoy na Avril wameondoka.

Why?

During an interview with Mzazi Willy M Tuva, King Kaka explained reasons why:

Unajua pia kuna mkataba, kuna contract.

Na contract iko na timeline.

So, ikifika time flani, tunarelease artist.

Saa zingine artist, pia ni vizuri a-grow kivyake, ama labda a-move to a new management.

So huwa tuna-encourage msanii akipata kwingine, ambapo anahisi ita-m-benefit, zaidi, asikose kuongea.

Kenyan singer-songwriter, actress and entertainer, Avril.

Rap artist, King Kaka highlighted what role Kaka Empire record label had, when it came to management of artistes:

Because, kazi ya Kaka Empire, hatujakuja ku-own watu, we´re here just to help.

Help you in your journey.

Kama tunaweza kuchukua kutoka level hii, tukufikishe level hii, sawa.

Ukipata namna ya kuenda level mpya, yaani sisi ni furaha yetu.

The rap king actually revealed that contrary to probably feeling low, he is actually gladdened to see artists grow through his label, to greater heights:

Mimi ile siku nitaona msanii ambaye ashapita kwa mkono yangu, ambaye amekuwa big artist, mimi huwa nafurahi sana, nafurahi sana.

So, that´s the motive ya Kaka Empire, we are not here to own people.

Tunakuchukua kwa muda fulani, we give you what we can, then we elevate you to a new level.

Then ile level utafika, upate mwingine wa kukufikisha, aah, furaha yetu sana.

Dancehall artist, Ali Yusuf, better known as, Arrow Bwoy

He showed appreciation to all he has worked with and are still working with and wishes them all, a successful journey, up in their career choices.

So, we are very happy for our artists ambao tushawork na wao and we´re wishing them all the best!

Just being in their career for a certain period of time, yeah, it was a learning process for us.

Na bado tunaendelea ku-learn.
