Slain rugby player Mike Okombe laid to rest in Kakamega (Photos)

Rugby players from all over Kenya gathered in Kakamega county to bid their fallen colleague the final goodbye. Mike Okombe was stabbed to death on November 4th.

Four people including Okombe’s girlfriend were implicated in his death. The fallen Nakuru RFC player was declared dead upon arrival at Valley Hospital.

A requiem mass for the deceased was held in Nakuru Citam church before the body was transported to Kakamega county for burial.

Okombe’s former club Nakuru RFC had been raising money for the deceased’s family. The club targeted to raise 1 million before Okombe’s burial.

Girlfriend tried to kill him before

Okombe’s father Josephat Shitindo Okombe revealed that he advised his son to end relationship with his girlfriend after she attacked him in January.

Josephat says Maryanne Mumbi cut Okombe’s hand with a knife and caused an injury that kept him out of the national 15s team.

The second attack on November 4th would end Okombe’s life. Several rugby players traveled to Kakamega on Saturday November 18th to bury their slain colleague.

We all thought Mike Okombe was single handily killed by his girlfriend Maryanne Mumbi. It turns out there is more than meets the eye in the murder of the Nakuru Top Fry rugby player.

Mike was stabbed to death on Saturday evening November 4th in Nakuru. His girlfriend who is the prime suspect went underground before she finally surrendered to the police.

Police arrest more suspects

Apparently 37-year-old MarryAnne Mumbi  isn’t the only suspect in the murder of her 27-year-old boyfriend. Police have arrested three rugby players in connection with Okombe death.

The three players arrested include Calvins Otieno, Eric Mochache and Vincent Omondi . The three together with Maryanne Mumbi were presented before Nakuru Chief Magistrates Josephat Kalo on Tuesday.

The prosecution took them to court to seek direction on detaining them pending completion of investigation. The court ordered the four held in custody at the Menengai Police Station until Monday next week when they will be charged.

Postmortem

Okombe’s body lies at Valley Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination. The results will shade light into his death and also help prosecutors build concrete case against the suspects.

Nakuru Top Fry rugby player Mike Okombe was stabbed to death by his girlfriend on Saturday evening. The 27-year-old player was stabbed by his girlfriend at a birthday party in Kiamunyi estate, Nakuru.

Okombe attended the birthday party organized by his girlfriend’s sister for her 8 year old child. The deceased was embroiled in a scuffle with his 37 year old girlfriend who stabbed him at least twice.

The rugby player died at the Kiamunyi home where he was attending the birthday. Standard reports that those at the party delayed taking him to hospital. It is believed that they were all drunk, they didn’t took the matter seriously.

Okombe was finally rushed to Valley Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hid body had a wound on the left side of the chest and another on the left cheek.

The murder suspect went underground after committing the heinous crime. The murder weapon was also missing from the crime scene.

Police officers who visited the crime scene had difficulty investigating the killing as it emerged that blood stains in the house were cleaned, only leaving traces outside the house.

Akombe’s girlfriend however resurfaced on Monday November 6th. The 37 year old lady surrendered to police on Monday accompanied by her lawyer. She however denies being involved in the murder of her 27 year old boyfriend.

Police detain car used to ferry Okombe to hospital

Meanwhile the car that carried the deceased to Valley Hospital has been detained at Nakuru Central Police Station. Apparently the driver was involved in an accident while ferrying Okombe to hospital.

The driver hit two motorcycle operators in a shed along the road leaving them seriously injured. The car, which is parked at Central Police Station, had a flat left front tyre and damaged headlights.
