Timmy Tdat Vs Willy Paul Vs Khaligraph: Who is the best live performer?

When you attend a gig, you expect to be entertained and this largely depends on the performers and what they do on stage. Truth is, anyone can get on stage but very few people can own it. (I sound like a motivational speaker at this point).

I have attended a couple of gigs over the last few years and watched some on YouTube and in my honest opinion some of the best live Kenyan performers are; The Kansoul, Jua Cali, Juliani, Nameless, Sauti Sol, Avril, Timmy Tdat, Willy Paul and Khaligraph Jones.

Today, we’ll focus on the last three names because they are individuals who are current i.e. they don’t belong to any groups and they have been in the game for almost the same period of time and they are still relevant to date.

We would like to find out who among the three you consider the best live performer and why. What makes each of them stand out and why? We want to know how they manage to pull large crowds to their events.

Willy Paul

Willy Paul
Willy Paul

Apart from having mad energy while performing, the Tam Tam hitmaker is known to pull stunts on stage. He always does something unexpected perhaps this is why his fans can’t get enough of him.

Timmy Tdat

Timmy Tdat

The Kipopo hitmaker is not only energetic, he also knows how to interact with the crowd. To add to that, he’s likely to dance seductively with a girl on stage during a gig.

Khaligraph Jones

Khaligraph Jones
Khaligraph Jones

The O.G as he is popularly known is good at crowd control. He’s not jumpy like the other two but if you attend his gig, you’ll definitely get value for your money. He has a unique style of entertaining his fans and in my opinion, it works for him.

According to you, who among the three is the be best live performer? Tell us!

Khaligraph has taken Kenyan music international with his latest release dubbed ‘Superman’ (Video)

Kenyan music is now international thanks to rapper alias Khaligraph Jones. Anyway, let’s be honest, Kenyan music crossed Africa’s borders a long time ago. All I mean is that his latest is release is a gamechanger. That’s all.

Papa Jones has been on a roll since the year began. If you are keen, you’ll notice that he has a new single, including songs in which he is featured, almost every three weeks.

Nameless recently featured him on the remix of Megarider. The song, which was released roughly three few weeks ago, has been getting massive airplay on local TV and radio stations.

Even before the dust settles, Khaligraph is back with yet another single. And no, we are not complaining. In fact, we couldn’t be any happier.

Khaligraph

Yesterday, Khaligraph dropped his latest single dubbed Superman and belive you me, it’s a work of art. Just like wine, this 28-year-old rapper keeps getting better with time.

In the song, Khaligraph talks about his musical journey and how he became one of the biggest rappers in the game because of his sheer determination.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwrqpEuhdi9/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=8kakeqq06nwz

As expected, his rap flow was on point in the song. His lyrics were mostly in English so much so that if don’t know who Papa Jones is you would mistake it for a foreign song. Okay, I’m pushing it.

My favourite line in the song is “My passion for music drove me to the studio not of the money and hype, was dedicated and committed I made the microphone my honey and wife…”

The video which was directed by Jeff Adair was also on point. As it begins, there’s a flicker which hits the ground before Khaligraph emerges from a bush. Perhaps, this is meant to reinforce the fact that he’s a superman.

The beat, which was produced by Motif, was also superb.

Watch Superman below and tell us what you think.

Issa TBT: The night shift job that made Nameless whom he is today

Your favorite Kenyan artist, Nameless is a star in the lucrative music industry that sees many tip off just shortly after they step in.

However, Music star, Nameless, has defied the odds and remains relevant to date, a whooping 20 years down the road.

Celebrated Kenyan pop artist, Nameless

Nameless takes us down memory lane of what his teenage life was like, a stage that has made him who he is today.

Both exciting, scaring but he dared it all.

That Call

I was just a campus student, young kid, I remember that day I was having a night shift job.

So me and my girlfriend, Wahu, she used to walk me half way on my way to work, , and then I´d head back to college.

Nameless and his then girlfriend, Wahu kagwi

So that day, I think I was a bit down, I was feeling really down.

Wifey, girlfriend at that time was trying to uplift my spirits but I was like, it will be alright.

Then I went to work.

When I reached jobbo, ofcos, my friend was there, we used to work just the 2 of us night shift.

Newton and me.

We started working as per kawaida and then, something interesting happened.

On the radio, at the time, Muthoni Bwika announced that the biggest producer, Tejo Signs in studio was looking for artists; rap or sing, give a call:

Yeeeah, Are you gifted? Are you talented? Can you drop a rhyme? Can you sing?

Well am waiting for you because he is looking out for talent and the person who wins, will cut a record with him aka, ´a single´ so just don´t sit around and give me a call on 24….

Nameless could not help but listen keenly.

I knew I had an interest in rapping, but I wasn´t sure that was my talent.

He thought about giving his friend, Newton a hint about his desire to give the producer a call and all, but he decided to keep it to himself.

Nameless stands up and goes to the office next door, to make that call.

To his surprise, Muthoni picks and she´s like:

Yoh, you wanna try it?

Yah, I wanna try.

Let´s go.

Popular Kenyan singer, David Mathenge, stage name, ´Nameless´

Breakthrough

So Nameless is given beats to rap to and here he goes:

Asubuhi na mapema, naamka, ninaoga, nauliza, mirror mirror on the ukuta, what do I need….?

Muthoni gave Nameless some positive vibes and went ahead:

Woh, that´s pretty cool…What´s your name?

Nameless was not sure what answer to give because he hadn´t decided on an artistic name so it became a challenge.

And bang! He picked on ´Nameless´ because chances are that his boss was listening on radio and all.

So Muthoni went with it but once they had made a decision, they would sure call back.

Nameless then heads back to office and Newton can´t just believe his friend missed a guy called ´Nameless´ rap on the radio.

And in my head I´m thinking, should I tell him it´s me?

So I ask him, what did you think about it, and stuff like that.

Next day, announcement is, ´Nameless´ actually won, he is now in the finals.

Same thing, he walks out of the room, leaves Newton in the office and goes into the next office, makes the call and returns.

So Newton is like, dude you keep missing.

Every time you go to the toilet, this guy comes on air.

Newton likes the rap and all and Nameless feels encouraged.

Good thing about it, is funny enough, guys liked the vibe and they voted me in and I won the gig with Tedd.

And…two days later, I was recording Megarider.

I can say that call I made, changed my life because at that point, on Monday, the next week, they launched my Megarider.

People loved it, it became my hit, and now I had to be Nameless.

People were anxious to know his kind of profile.

And that´s when my journey started, literally 20 years ago.

Nameless and his then girlfriend, Wahu were the key voices in the song.

Celebrated popular couple, The Mathenges

Wahu is the voice behind the ´Nameless´ music bed as Nameless takes down the rap.

Fellow secular-cum-gospel artist, Wahu Kagwi is the mother of Nameless´ 2 adorable daughters.

Tedd Josiah produced Nameless debut dingle, ´Megarider´.

Megarider was recorded and released back in 1999 as Nameless first single, which opened paths to his unexpected musical journey.

The rest is history.

How Jua Cali has remained relevant to date

Paul Julius Nunda, alias Jua Cali, is still relevant to date, almost two decades after he made his debut in the local music industry.

His fanbase continues to grow every day. Event organizers are known to include him and in their line-ups so that he can pull huge crowds.

However, many people don’t understand how he has managed to stay afloat in the competitive music business for such a long time.

Most of the people that he started off with, save for Nameless, either quit music along the way or have been struggling to make a comeback.

His success over the years has left many wondering “What’s his secret?”, “How does he do it?”, “What sets him apart?”

Well, it’s simple. First, his unique style of music and ability to use sheng lyrically sets him apart from the rest. As the pioneer of Genge, Jua Cali shaped the Kenyan sound.

Jua Cali

There have been various adaptions of Genge since 2001 when we were first introduced to the sound. However, as you know, the master can never be outshone.

Secondly, Jua Cali is a hard worker. Unlike most artists, music is his only job. He spends most of his time in studio and has more than 100 unreleased songs.

If he releases a song and it’s doing well on the charts, you’ll find him in studio hours later working on the next hit. This is not the case with most modern day musicians who prefer to go on a break when their song is topping playlists.

Lastly, the King of Genge is humble and easy to work with. If you agree to meet up at certain time, he will arrive at the meeting venue ahead of you.

He also doesn’t have the “you must know people” syndrome as is the case with most local musicians. If you meet and you don’t know him, he will introduce himself and not ask you to Google him.

These are just some of the reasons why Jua Cali is still popular to this very day. As such, you should not be shocked when he is still receiving massive airplay 10 years down the line.

Nameless asserts that he fully supports his wife’s journey in gospel industry. He said that marriage had taught them to support each other fully.

“When she finally joined gospel, I had to let her be, because it is about how she feels, not what I feel for her. She told me this is where I am and my heart is here and I promised my support to her.

“When she finally joined gospel, I had to let her be, because it is about how she feels, not what I feel for her. She told me this is where I am and my heart is here and I promised my support to her. We’ve learnt how to support each other, and though we are a couple, we are separate human beings. If my call will be gospel in future, I will also join her because it is always about what inspires us.”

Nameless facing accusations of stealing new song’s beat days after Willy Paul faced similar accusation

Nameless has been called out for ‘stealing’ the beats of his new song, the veteran musician dropped a new jam dubbed ‘Am Good’ a few days ago.

The accusation come only a few days after a certain artist by the name of Gee Bwoy claimed that Willy Paul stole the song ‘Bora Uhai’ from him.

A fan commented on Nameless’ post on Instagram claiming that the singer stole the beats of his song from a Tanzanian artist called Faccie.

“Beat sio yako ioo show some appreciation kwa mwenye wimboo. The original song is called Njoo by artist Faccie from Tanzania,” a certain Peterabdalah commented.

It didn’t have exclusive license

Nameless promptly responded to Peterabdalah explaining that the beat was bought from a instrumental and that he used it because it didn’t have an exclusive license.

““@peterabdalah sema kaka. The beat was bought from a instrumental website called Beatsbysv… Since I didn’t get an exclusive license, the beat has been definitely been use by many people… Mimi siwezi iba beat buda. Blessup… #Amgood ????,” Nameless responded.

Wahu already pregnant?

Nameless however couldn’t confirm or deny whether his wife was already expectant. He said sometimes his wife appear to have a baby bump because photos are taking when she had eaten a lot of food.

“Sometimes, pictures are taken and fans wanaona vitu zao and start suspecting she may be pregnant. Those pictures you see could be that she ‘ate’ a lot that day so her stomach was big. I am with her everyday but I have not realised, but I don’t mind another kid.

“I don’t really know (if she’s pregnant) but I will talk to her and ask to confirm by myself. Being in the public, you know that you are the target for scandals. So we are careful with everything we do, especially because we have a family to protect. So we try balance and put family matters away from the media,” said Nameless.

Wahu reveals how Nameless’ life-threatening brain condition was a major turning point in her life

Last year Nameless underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. The singer’s wife Wahu Kagwi says her husband’s life-threatening condition was a turning point in her life.

Sometimes in October 2017 Nameless was rushed to hospital after small blood vessels in his brain ruptured causing blood to leak in the brain. The ‘Inspire Me’ hit maker was hospitalized for about 3 weeks as doctors closely monitered his situation.

How Wahu was affected

Wahu reveals that her husband’s condition brought her closer to God. She told Word Is that she resorted to praying and singing as she felt Nameless’ healing was in the hands of God.

“In the situation where my husband was unwell, I went on my knees because it is not about how popular or how much people love you. Those are not the things that matter. Sometimes God shows you ‘I Am God’ and you just have to come down and say yes You are God and You are everything.

“I resonated with the song because of that space and I guess I can say when my husband was unwell God says he is Jehovah-Rapha the healer. The beautiful thing about God is He doesn’t contradict himself and He doesn’t change. His word is his word,” said Wahu.

“Nikiwaacha they will live a full life” Nameless speaks about principles he has instilled in his children

Nameless and Wahu have been married for the past 12 years. The celebrity power couple is blessed with two daughters – Tumiso and Nyakio.

Nameless opened up about parenting in an interview with Kiss FM. He wishes that he could have had his kids way earlier now that he is a parent and loving every minute of it.

“One thing I wish I could have done is I think I should have had my kids earlier. Our kids change our lives so my much, and especially how you look at life. As I always say, there are things I see in my kids that explain so much about me. Like I look at my children and say, this is exactly me, and you begin to understand your strengths and weaknesses,” said Nameless.

Nameless’ family

Principles

The ‘Inspire’ hit maker says his kids would live a full life even when he’s gone. Nameless reveals the principles that he has instilled in his daughters.

“My mum always reminded me that my body is a temple of God and if you do not take care of your body, then it will affect many other aspects of your life. I always try and encourage them to keep trying and striving. Those are the principles I want to instill in my kids’ life, so that nikiwaacha, they will live a full life. A life where they touch people and they are genuinely happy, not necessarily rich but happy and successful,” says Nameless.

“My wife tells me something in me changed after the accident” Nameless recounts accident that claimed E-Sir’s life

The events of March 16th 2003 will forever remain embedded in Nameless’ life. On that date Kenya lost its greatest musician in a road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

Nameless and E-sir were traveling on the same car when the accident happened. The two were on their way back to Nairobi from a concert at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

Nameless survived the accident but something in him changed forever. The veteran singer narrated the events of March 16th 2003 during an interview with the Star.

E-sir

I didn’t sink in

Nameless says his brother broke to him news about E-Sir’s death when he was still in hospital. He opted to find E-Sir who had been taken to a different hospital because he just couldn’t believe what he was being told.

“I did not know from the time I was taken to hospital when it all happened. I was told he was in a different hospital. I had no phone or other way of reaching him. My bro came from Nairobi. I asked everyone and no one told me. My brother is the one who told me, ‘E-Sir didn’t make it. It did not sink in, like you know you were with someone and then you are told they are no more, it cannot sink in. I changed and entered in a car but when in, is when Boomba was played, and all I remember is the presenters announced it. At this point is when I broke down and that is when it sank in. I cried and as I was hearing his song playing, I could feel like he was talking to me,” said Nameless.

Moving on

Nameless

Nameless further reveals that moving on was hard for him after E-Sir’s death. The two had been performing together almost in all shows.

“Moving on without him was hard for some moment. My wife always tells me that something in me changed. It took me back and I remember going to perform a song in his remembrance. I remember when performing, I still had an injury but getting on stage and the love I felt for E-Sir just made me say that despite him going, I had to keep the fire going.”

Wahu opens up about that awkward moment when her dad walked into her room in Chiromo campus and found Nameless

Nameless’ first meeting with Wahu’s parents is an encounter that most men dread of. Wahu’s father and mother busted Nameless at their daughter’s campus room when they walked in unannounced.

Both Nameless and Wahu were caught unawares by Kagwis impromptu visit. Wahu says the her parents had a habit of dropping in unannounced at her campus.

Wahu with her father and mother during her wedding

He couldn’t take off his marvin

Wahu says Nameless broke into a bit of a sweat when her parents found him at her room. She reveals that he couldn’t take off his marvin because he didn’t want his future father and mother-in-law to have a bad impression about him. (Nameless was hiding his dreadlocks).

Wahu and Nameless when her parents busted them at her room in Chiromo campus. The photo was taken by Wahu’s late father

Below is Wahu’s narration of that awkward meeting at her campus room:

Here are some fun facts about this particular throwback pic that I bet @namelesskenya
Does not remember ?
1) this was taken in my Chiromo campus room
2) by one Mr. Kagwi, otherwise known as my father, who had randomly come to visit me, accompanied by his lovely wife
3) this was the first time that my boyfriend was meeting my parents- (my boyfriend had also just randomly dropped in, so no prior thinking had gone into this)
4) my boyfriend broke into a bit of a sweat…..but couldn’t remove his marvin… because it would reveal the short on- setting dreadlocks that may not be what you want as a first impression on the father of your girlfriend (I guess)
5) my room was small, and seeing that we were running out of sitting space- I, in my infinite wisdom, suggested that I could sit on my boyfriend…. And he needless to say… thought I was nuts!!!! ?? So that idea just died like that ?
6) that’s his “this is awkward” pose….and that’s my “yeah…..this is totally awkward” half smile that looks like I’m chewing on something ??
7) at the end of it all….. My dad did walk me down the Isle…and did put my hand in his. Not with a warning, but with a hug…and so it did end well , despite the awkward beginning ?? . #justthoughtidshare #funnyfondmemory

5 Kenyan male celebrities who have never been involved in any cheating scandals

It seems that Kenyan celebrities are not the type to cheat or rather they know how to keep their dirt on the low.

While Tanzanian entertainment industry is full of cheating scandals and drama; Kenyan celebrities are just out and about trying to make more money.

The industy is getting boring

However, I do agree that something should be done to spice up the industry….at least new songs, new relationships for those who are single, wedding and of course babies!

Most of the people in the entertainment industry are above 25 years meaning its about time to settle down.

Anyway I hear most bachelors prefer hitting the clubs for stress free relationships; but now we are tired of the same old trend!

I have managed to come up with a list of male celebrities who have never been caught up in any cheating scandals. 3 are married while two are in serious relationships.

Nameless

SInger Nameless and Wahu

He has been married to Wahu for over a decade now and he is still the same loving man. He has never been portrayed as a bad husband on any tabloid and I guess he married his better half!

Wyre

After his wedding, Wyre has maintained a low profile about his wife and family. Just close friends know about Wyre’s private life otherwise all we get to see is his music videos.

Eric Omondi

Well, I haven’t come across any scandal involving him cheating on his exes. Now that he is dating Chantal, we haven’t heard or seen him with any other woman if it’s not for business.

Khaligraph Jones

Having been his lady (kashy)from way before he became famous, Khaligraph Jones has never been caught entertaining any other lady. All we know is that he is in the game to make more money.

Rashidy Abdalla

Rashid Abdalla and his wife

Though his religion allows a man to have four wives, Rashid is still with Lulu Hassan; the love of his life and mother of his kids.

Do you have any more suggestions?

“We used to be rivals” Nameless and Jua Cali demonstrate how Kikuyus and Luos can live in harmony

Nameless and Jua Cali’s bromance transcends ethnic divisions and political affiliations. The two veteran musicians have demonstrated Luos and Kikuyus can live in harmony even at a time when divisive politics threatens the country’s peace and stability.

On Saturday October 28th rival tribal gangs attacked each other in Kawangware. Innocent women and children were caught in the crossfire which resulted to the deaths of some people.

Nameless (a Kikuyu) and Jua Cali (a Luo) have set the best example to shun divisive politics. The two music heavyweights spent time relaxing together over the past weekend.

Nameless talks about his rivalry with Jua Cali

Nameless says there used to be bad blood between him and the Genge king. The ‘Inspire Me’ singer explains that he used to view Jua Cali as a threat back then when he was still the don.

Nameless chilling with Jua Cali at his crib

“Once major rivals in music, now respected friends who go through similar triumphs and challenges in the industry… juzi @juacaligenge visited me at my home and our kids spent the evening playing together, blessup my brother….I always remember when I first met him in a show in mombasa and the MC for the night was Edward Kwach and kwach whispered to me “Monski you need to watch out for this guy Jua kali, he is becoming a force to be reckoned with” Those days I was used to being the show stopper ( yani mimi ndio nilikuwa wa kusema).. haha.. and yup Jua Kali shikad that show heavy.. ( akaniingisha baridi) I went back to ogopa to report! “Guys, this calif guys wanaanza kusumbua” hahah. Good times!! #brothers #respect #stillhere #fathers #Elders #reflecting #recoveringwellthough #GodlovesMe #GodlovesKenya,” wrote Nameless.

Nameless’ illness brings him closer to his last born daughter Nyakio

Nameless is still recuperating at home after undergoing a successful surgery. The singer is using his sick leave to bond with his last born daughter Nyakio Mathenge.

Nameless was admitted to hospital late September 2017. The father of two went under the knife to remove a life threatening blood clot in his brain.

The ‘Inspire Me’ hit maker was discharged from hospital but doctors still haven’t given him a clean bill of health to resume normal duties.

Nameless bonds with Nyakio

The singer’s sick leave has brought him closer to his last born daughter Nyakio. Nameless recently attended Nyakio’s class to bond with her.

“During this time of rest and recovery I am getting a chance to just relax and bond more with my kids. Got an opportunity to just join Nyakio in her class and meet her friends that she always talks about when she gets home..Loved it,” wrote Nameless.

“Why do we people fight and kill each other?” Nameless delivers sensible message to Kenyans ahead of repeat election

Politics has deeply divided Kenyans along tribal lines. IEBC is supposed to hold repeat presidential election on Thursday October 26th but only Jubilee supporters are going to vote.

Nasa has instructed its supporters to boycott the repeat presidential election. The opposition plans to hold mother of all demonstrations in its strongholds on Thursday October 26th.

Divisive politics has in some instance resulted to the deaths of Kenyans. Ethnic tension between some tribes is at all-time high and there are fears tribal clashes might erupt anytime.

Nameless eases ethnic tension

Nameless has dropped a new song ‘Oh Why’ two days to repeat election. The message in the singer’s song is directed to Kenyans at this time when deep tribal divisions is threatening the country’s peace and cohesion.

“Why do we people fight and kill each each other…oh why…. Why must the innocent ones always suffer…” Nameless sung in part.
