Njoki Chege to MC Jessy: Don’t insult your audience, you are who you are because of them

Comedian MC Jessy sparked uproar when he publicly shamed a man old enough to be his father during Churchill Show live recording in Nakuru.

The comedian made an unpleasant joke about the old man which didn’t go down well with many people, he directly referred him as a sponsor and suggested that he is ugly.

MC Jessy was forced to apologize to the old man after facing criticisms on social media. The Churchill Show comedian admits his joke was in bad taste.

Never insult your audience

Nation columnist Njoki Chege has come out ‘teach’ MC Jessy some manners about treating audiences with the respect they deserve.

“The greatest lesson I have learnt as a columnist is “never offend your readers” — a lesson I got from a former friend. It is a lesson that everyone in the media business ought to learn; don’t offend your audiences in either of these two ways — by insulting them or by insulting their intelligence. The audiences (readers, viewers and listeners) are much more intelligent than we in the media give them credit for,” wrote Njoki Chege in part.

Njoki insists that the old man didn’t deserve to be shamed that way. The scribe reminds MC Jessy that he is what he is today because of his audience.

“A local comedian is giving a joke on how women should forget their obsession with handsome men and give more attention to ugly men who have a more “personal” face.  I feel sorry for the old man. He did not deserve to be publicly shamed for his looks nor be falsely accused of being a “sponsor” – jokingly or otherwise. You do not make the audience your joke; neither do you approach them with such a condescending attitude. You are because of your audiences,” wrote Njoki.

Njoki is also unsatisfied with MC Jessy’s apology, she also calls on the Churchill Show’s producers to issue a public apology on the incident.

“The legal ramifications of such televised embarrassment aside, I think whoever runs the show needs to publicly apologise to the mzee. A public embarrassment calls for a public apology and an avowal that such a thing will never happen again.”

The Nation columnist also apologized to her readers about previous columns that offended many people, especially Subaru owners.

“Finally, let me take this opportunity to unreservedly seek forgiveness to any reader who read any of my columns and felt offended. We are because you are, dear readers.”

The end of city girl! Njoki Chege quits Daily Nation like Larry Madowo?

Njoki Chege has announced that her column ‘City Girl’ on Daily Nation has come to an end. The controversial columnist left readers guessing her next move.

Njoki Chege’s hard hitting opinion pieces have earned her admiration and resentment. Subaru owners in particular won’t forgive Njoki anytime soon.

The controversial columnist has now announced change of career trajectory. Njoki reveals that she is taking a whole new new direction from what she used to do.

“It is not lost on me that the column has acquired a particular fan base that appreciates the bold, no-holds barred approach. This is why I promise my readers that even as I continue to grow into the next phase of my life, and even as they see a different type of content and approach, the witty, bold and sassy Njoki Chege will remain intact; only this time, she will be speaking a different language,” wrote Njoki Chege.

Admission of guilt

Njoki admits she ruffled people’s feathers in her columns. She however says that she is still amazed by confidence she had when she articulated herself in her columns.

“Many of my critics accused me of boorishness and critiqued my allegedly ill-informed ideologies and jaundiced perspectives. In fact, what amazed many was not the outrageous columns, but the confidence with which I broadcast my views. A good number of you also thought that I was writing on issues that I perhaps was too young, too inexperienced and too ignorant to tackle,” says Njoki.

“You didn’t have to apologize, you did nothing wrong” Njoki Chege tells Eric Omondi

Njoki Chege says those criticizing Eric Omondi over his video are people whose minds are in the gutter. She states that critics chose to sexualize the comedian’s video.

Video of Eric Omondi swimming naked with children in Turkana sparked condemnation from all quarters. However a few have stood firm to defend the comedian.

Njoki Chege says Eric ought not to have apologized to anyone. She explains that the comedian was just exploring his creativity.

“Eric, I have news for you. You did not have to apologise. I am going to be one of the people who will say this, the comedian did nothing wrong. Let us first get a few facts right before I can make my argument. Eric is a great young man, with a fine, creative head on his shoulders. He is, by any standards, a successful man, one of the few Kenyan comedians who are actually funny. He is creative, ever churning well-thought out and brilliantly executed comedy videos,” wrote Njoki Chege.

Negative criticism

Njoki further says that those throwing shades at Eric are only doing so blindly. She explains that Eric’s video was an effort to parody a scene from ‘The God’s Must Be Crazy’ movie.

“Those criticising him are mostly people whose minds are in the gutter, whose hearts are so carnal, that they sexualise everything and anything without considering the context. Omondi’s video was an effort to parody a scene from the film The God’s Must Be Crazy. His video is also reminiscent of the good old days when naughty boys would toss their clothes in the bush and jump in the river for a quick dip and their cheeky friends would hide their clothes. Omondi just wanted to recreate the village life and a movie scene with an underlying theme of celebrating our African culture. He wanted to tickle us, because that is what comedians do. They strive to make us laugh, and that is perhaps one of the toughest jobs on earth.”

“I like you Babu” 6 things Njoki Chege told Babu Owino in her letter that revealed her true nature

Njoki Chege built a persona of a ruthless alpha female through her column on Daily Nation. But on Saturday the popular columnist revealed her true nature in the letter she wrote to Babu Owino.

Compassion is the word that best describes Njoki’s open letter to the controversial Embakasi East MP. Unlike in other columns where the introduction alone is usually filed with bile, Njoki’s letter to Babu Owino starts with her admiration for him before she moves on to positively criticize him for the crude words he said about Uhuru Kenyatta.

Below are the 6 things Njoki said to Babu in her letter that proves she cares about the controversial MP:

  1. She expressed her admiration for Babu

“Aye Comrade!” you said. I was surprised to hear a bubbly voice on the other end, cracking jokes and asking me how I have been all these years. It occurred to me that as an acquaintance, I needed to do more than write a news story about you. So I have decided to write you a letter. I like you, Babu. I like your vim, courage and drive. You are a bit of a “drama queen”, with your silly little antics but all the same, I think I am right when I say you’ve got your heart in the right place,” wrote Njoki in part.

2. She reminded Babu about his past and how he made it against all odds

“Many people don’t know how far you’ve come. As someone who has written your story a couple of times before, I know you grew up in a slum in Kisumu. To make ends meet, your beloved mother used sell chang’aa and engage in menial jobs just to put food on the table. From what you have told me in the past, you had a rough childhood and started spending nights in police cells when you were still in primary school; when police would crackdown on chang’aa brewers.”

3. She reminded Babu he had already succeed in life at only 29

“Let nobody lie to you that you are not doing well for your age. There are not many 29-year-olds that are in your position. The truth is, you are a young achiever and you have done very well for yourself so far. I would even say you have proven yourself already. On top of that, you have a few things going on for you. You are educated, young, brilliant, dripping with youthful energy and you have a lovely young family.”

4. She politely warns Babu he was heading towards a dangerous path

“However, there are a few loose ends you need to tie up, and this is where your smile might disappear. Babu, you need to stop. You are fast hurtling down the path of self-destruction and self-sabotage. Like many Kenyans, I was shocked beyond words when you uttered the words you did at that rally. No matter how you try to spin it, it came out very badly and this is not looking good. People are angry out here. I am angry, too.”

5. She tells Babu he could do better as a politician

“Babu, you ought not to be like those other uncouth politicians. You can cultivate some level of refinement and intelligence. You sat in an actuarial science class and now almost completing a law degree. It’s high time you stopped behaving like an ignorant, bucolic yokel and started to behave like the leader the people of Embakasi East Constituency elected you to be.”

6. She asserts that she still believes in Babu Owino’s ability to do the right thing

“You’re better than this. I am one of the few Kenyans who still believe that there is room for redemption. So pull yourself together, clean up your act and be the leader you were born to be.”
