Okwara talks about tough days when she was a waiter earning 150 bob a day

Yvonne Okwara, a household name in Kenya, who has been in the media industry in for over 12 years now started off as a waitress.

The 36-year-old journalist recently revealed that her first job was a waitress and earned sh150. This left many shocked as they wondered out how she managed to live on such low amounts.

“First job was at walker’s restaurant at reinsurance plaza. Waitress. Earned 150bob a day!” Okwara Tweeted.

A Fan then asked her:

“The trenches in hospitality can be unforgiving! 150 bob, hii Nairobi?!”

Tough pay

To which she responded:

I know, right? Restaurant opened at 9am. We had to be in at 7am. Closed at 8pm. Stayed till 10pm to clean up. All for 150bob. But I learned a lot. To respect wait staff and dealing with people! Smile goes a long way. Earned more in tips this way!”

Adding:

“Mungu ni mkubwa. Hard work. Humility. Passion. Plus using every opportunity to learn is what is key. There is a lesson in everything.”

It has just been 6 months since the beauty left the surgery room having also encountered a slip disk injury and a previous surgery.

However tough it all might be on her, she believes she was born a warrior and does not take healthy living for a joke as she gets up by 5 to warm up the chilly road.

She attests it all to her Le Husband who has journeyed with her all through and who is also her running buddy.

The year 2018 saw it rough for the spectacle after undergoing 2 surgeries although she reveals she is on her journey to recovery.

Dear God, Thank you for 2018!

It’s been a year of change, transition for me. Change in my health. I made significant moves to get fit and healthy, had surgery again.

But I’m getting back on the saddle.

Further on, she has grieved losses after the deaths of her brother, uncle and her father-in-law.

All in all, the beauty still comes out robust to face her everyday blessing and thank the Almighty for the unending graces he has showered upon her life.
