End of an era! The Star newspaper set to stop publishing COMPLETELY

All mainstream media houses in Kenya have been hit by hard economic time and many resorted to retrenching their staff. The Star newspaper is on the verge of complete shutdown.

Print media in Kenya has been dominated by five newspapers for years; Daily Nation, Standard, The Star, Business Daily and The Nairobian.

While The Star makes the cut to be on the top tier, all is not well in terms of circulation. Business Today reports that the Star could be closed as its circulation has dropped by more than 50% over the past two years to below 10,000 copies.

Apparently there are plans to sustain the Star for the next six months in hope of reaping from election campaign readership and advertising before shutting it down altogether to focus on digital.

The Star which employs over 200 people directly is expected to trim its workforce to retain a smaller team for its online edition which is faring well.
