Where to Stream the Best Songs of Ghana

Gone are the days when we had to wait for hours for the latest and greatest hits to be played on the radio. We live in the age of smartphones when everything from the latest news, movie trailers, the constantly updates odds at Betway Ghana, the latest gossip, and yes, even the latest and greatest hits are just a swipe and a tap away. While music downloads are still all the rage, an ever-increasing number of people now stream their favourite playlists directly from the cloud. Where in the cloud, you might ask? Well, let’s take a look at the two major international streaming services where you can find updated playlists of Ghanaian music every day.

On YouTube Music

YouTube is a great service to stream music to your phone – unfortunately, you also have to watch the video while you listen to the song, otherwise, the free YouTube Music app will stop playback (playing in the background is still a premium feature, it seems). Luckily, there are solutions to circumvent this restriction – a Google search will tell you how.

While YouTube Music doesn’t have an official Ghanaian top list just yet but the service is already filled with great local music so go ahead and dive right in.

On Spotify

On Spotify, the situation is similar to YouTube Music: there’s no “Editorial” playlist to feature the top songs streamed in Ghana. Still, there are more than enough playlists featuring Sarkodie, Tems, Burna Boy, and many others. This one, for example, is updated pretty often, and has the “explicit” versions of the songs.

Spotify is currently the largest music streaming service in the world but it’s a bit “lazy” when it comes to officially entering certain countries – it has behaved the same in the European Union so it probably has little to do with the population’s average revenues. The lifeblood of the modern-day company is the expansion to new markets – we can expect Spotify (or at least Spotify Light) to continue conquering new countries in the coming years.

On Apple Music

The only major international streaming service officially available in Ghana right now is Apple Music. Moreover, it comes with a curated list of the top hits of the country that is updated each day. On today’s list, the top 5 spots are occupied by Sarkodie’s “Saara”, Teni’s “Billionaire”, Burna Boy’s “Anybody”, Joeboy’s “Beginning”, and Wizkid’s “Joro”. I think it’s safe to say that it has its proverbial finger pretty much on the pulse of the local music scene.

Apple Music costs $9.99 a month (around GHS 55) and it has a cheaper option for students that only costs $4.99 (around GHS 28).
