Overtime, some Nigerian entertainers, having made their marks in the industry, make an attempt to switch into politics. For most of them, this is in a bid to give back to the society.
Though a handful of them have been able to record success in politics, so many of them have not been so lucky. This, however, just goes a long way, to prove that popularity in entertainment, may not always be transferred to other sectors.
As the race for the 2019 electoral seats is on, we have seen some of these celebs making their political ambitions public. Though one may not confidently say yet, whether they will or will not succeed, we are sure that there are some of them that didn’t succeed in the past.
Below, is a list of five Nigerian entertainers that have failed in politics.
- Tony ‘One Week’ Munagor:
This actor/musician is a spectacular character that have tasted the best of both worlds. Popularly known for his song; ‘Everybody Gyrate’, the singer has both lost and won elections. In 2011, he contested and won the 2011 House of Assembly elections in Anambra state. The following electioneering year, didn’t smile so well at him, as he lost in his bid for reelection. This make him both a winner and a loser in the game.
- Kate Henshaw
Not entirely a failure, this award winning actress, picked up her native name, Offiong, to contest the seat of the Federal House of Representatives, representing Calabar South, in 2015. After losing out at the primaries, she was however, fortunate enough to get an appointment as Special Adviser, Liason, Lagos, to Governor Ben Ayade.
- Bob Manuel Odokwu:
Having enjoyed a couple of political appointments in Anambra state, this actor though it wise to represent the people of Idemili North at the Anambra State House of Assembly. Sadly, things didn’t go in his favour as he lost out during the election.
On the 10th of September 2015, ‘Gongo Aso’ crooner, 9ice made his intention to run for a political post known. Contesting under APC, the singer vied for the seat of the Federal House of Representatives in Ogbomosho North/Ogbomosho South/Orire Federal Constituency. Sadly, he didn’t do so well at the polls.
- Kanayo O Kanayo:
In 2011, this actor’s bid to represent the people of his Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives under APC, failed. He has however, now bounced back from nursing the wounds of his defeat, as he is set to contest under APGA. In 2019, he will be running for a seat at the Imo state House of Assembly.
As 2019 is just by the corner, we would like to see what the dreams of Kanayo and other celebrities vying for electoral positions will translate to.
