NGUGI WA THIONG’O HONOURED

Internationally recognized New York based Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong’o has added another feather to his cap. The septuagenarian has just this week been recognized by the National Black Writers Conference as an honoree for its 11th edition.

The NWBC, which was first presented in 1986, brings together writers from Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and America to a series of roundtables, panel discussions, author reading and story telling. It examines the history of black literature as well as highlights new and future directions for new and emerging literary voices.

Ngugi was honored with the W.E.B. du Bois Award. Other honorees alongside him were:

Ishmael Reed – John Oliver Killens Lifetime Achievement Award

Nikki Giovanni – Gwendolyn Brooks Award

Dr. Howard Dodson – Ida B. Wells Institutional Leadership Award

Ngugi wa Thiongo is currently a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine and also happens to be a receipient of 8 honorary doctorates. He is currently working on Book Two of his memoirs: In the House of the Interpreter.
