Shekhinah and Distruction Boyz nominated for 2018 MTV European Music Awards

There is no doubt we have some of the best in the music industry. Shekhinah and Distruction Boyz have been able to earn themselves nominations to the 2018 MTV European Music Awards.

They are in the Best African Act category.

Both Shekhinah and Distruction Boyz will battle it out with other musicians such as Nigeria’s Davido and Tiwa Savage, DRC’s Fally Ipupa, and Kenya’s Nyashinski.

We wish them all the best as they fly the country’s flag high.

Distruction Boyz insist they did not steal Omunye

Distruction Boyz have maintained their innocence in the face of a forensic copyright investigation which apparently concluded the track was stolen, claiming that the song was theirs and they would fight the allegations.

City Press report claimed the group’s summer smash hit Omunye was the same as DJ LAG’s Trip to New York released three months before Omunye.

Well Distruction Boyz spoke to Tshisha Live about the allegtions.

Distruction Boyz claimed that they purchased the song from DJ Mphyd and denied that he had copied the beat from DJ LAG.

“The guy who sold us the beat told us that he produced it and he did not even know DJ LAG. LAG posted a 30 second teaser of the song on Instagram but this guy doesn’t even have Instagram. How can we copy the song from an Instagram video,” the group’s  Zipho “Goldmax” Mthembu told TshisaLIVE.

He said the group was saddened by the claims and said it was an attempt to steal some of their shine.

“We are so sad. This is our song. This is our biggest song. We created the song from scratch. People have been dancing to this song for months. How come it is being questioned now?

He said the group would continue to perform the song and had not received any legal notice to stop.

“We have not been made aware of any legal action and I am confident that if they do, they will not win this case. We won’t stop performing the song. It is our song. People don’t understand gqom. We are not going to fight DJ LAG. We know him, why would we copy his style? Maybe he has a new album coming and he is touring overseas, so maybe this is a strategy to market him here.

The group are set to perform in Barcelona later this year and said they wanted the matter resolved before then.

The group’s business partner DJ Tira also spoke out on the report, saying such accusations were moving the industry backwards.

“This is the last thing we need. We are doing our best to promote this sound so it feeds black families. This is taking us back. Killing a black child’s dream. You will never win. The truth will prevail,” he wrote in a tweet.

Distruction Boyz go international

Distruction Boyz are spreading their wings beyond South Africa, with shows lined up in the UK, Canada and Europe.

Sonar Festival

The group is set to perform in Barcelona come June, at the Sonar music festival.

Sonar shared a message on their website saying: “Diplo presents Distruction Boyz SA.”

Que, one of the group’s members, said that they received an email from Diplo, inviting them to the event.

“We didn’t meet him when he was here because we were super busy but he reached out to us on email and we made it happen.”

Their goal is to now secure residency overseas.

Stampede experienced during Distruction Boyz homecoming

A stampede arose during Distruction Boyz homecoming this past weekend.

Security was overpowered by the large number of concertgoers. This happened after the crowd was told all tickers had been sold out and the venue was full to the capacity.

People mobbed the venue, pushing the gate and destroying the barricades. The event organisers had to open an overflow area to stop people from being trampled on.

No injuries

According to the venue’s manager Sophie Ndlovu, no injuries were reported.

“Everything was handled alright. Of course we would like to have avoided the situation but no one was hurt. We have learnt valuable lessons and next time we will deal with such events better.”

Distruction Boyz had heard stories of people losing valuables in the chaos but believed security handled the crisis well.

“We were naturally worried about the amount of people at the venue‚ people were on top of each other and there was no space for anyone. I am glad that no one was hurt. We threw the concert for our fans in our hometown and I guess everyone wanted to see the boys they had grown up with. I think it was just a case of people getting over excited.”

They had underestimated their appeal.

“I don’t think anyone is to blame. I just think‚ if we had known how many people would come to see us‚ we could have hired out a park. It was one of our first big events and it’s a learning curve.”

Distruction Boyz had been in talks with the venue to evaluate whether there was anyone who may have been affected by the incident.
