DJ Cleo issues public apology

DJ Cleo has issued a public apology for offence caused by a post he made. In the post, he was with convicted rapist Brickz. He has however said he will not remove the post as it will mean Brickz is guilty.

The DJ came under fire on social media when he posted a series of photos of himself and Brickz, which seemed to be sympathetic. In his tweet he wrote that everyone has a race to run and Brickz had fallen while running his. He went on to add that it was not yet over.

While his post split social media, DJ Cleo does not regret doing this.

“It was a metaphorical expression that I used. We know the crime, it has been publicised for four years. I don’t need to spell it out and evoke more emotions in victims or friends of victims. I was merely minding my own business and tweeting to say that this is my brother and his life is not yet over. Prisons are places of rehabilitation. Would you not visit your own father if he was in prison? Your own mother? Brother? Friend?”

He said that he does not condone rape and was even disgusted by it. He went on to apologize to anyone who may have been offended.

“It wouldn’t change anything. That is why I didn’t even delete my tweet. I stand by my words. I am sorry to anyone who may have been offended by the tweet. The intention was not to offend.

“There is no words in there that claim Brickz is a victim. No, that is a lie. To me, it was a positive tweet. The positivity around having seen him and our efforts going around to prisons.”

DJ Cleo on why he visited Brickz in Prison

DJ Cleo came under fire after he visited Brickz in prison.

Twitter users outraged, the DJ’s caption for the post is what seemed to be the cause of all the backlash.

“We all run our own races, he fell along the way… but the race is not over,” Cleo wrote.

Visiting the Metro FM Drive show on Monday afternoon, DJ Cleo cleared the air on the post, stating that he does not support rape.

According to the DJ he was at the prison as part of a soccer clinic along with a few local sports stars to coach the prison’s soccer teams. It was then that he ran into Brickz.

Explaining what he meant by that tweet, Cleo said: “The race is life. You run in your own lane, I run in my own lane. He fell off and he’s now doing the time, but his life is not over,” going on to refer to Brickz as his “brother from another mother.”

DJ Cleo caught up in a school hair policy row

DJ Cleo is caught up  in a hair-policy showdown with Capricorn High School in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Cleo has filed a complaint with the Limpopo department of education after his niece, who cannot be named to protect her identity, complained of racism at the public school.

Sowetan Live acquired the letter which Dj Cleo wrote

Here is the letter

“It has been brought to my attention that black female learners are being discriminated against at Capricorn High School.

“We cannot, over 20 years into democracy, allow our children to be treated like sub-humans on the basis of their skin colour or hair texture.

“I’m pleading with the department to investigate this as a matter of urgency and expose the rot at the school. Black learners are told to cut off their dreadlocks and when they refuse, they are grounded.”

This after school management allegedly ordered her and some of her schoolmates to cut their dreadlocks and braided hair.

They were allegedly asked to straighten their hair because they looked “untidy” and were accused of using their hair to hide drugs.

When they refused and demanded their fellow coloured, Indian and white pupils also cut off their long hair, their student cards were confiscated and they were locked out of the school.

This led to Cleo’s niece to inform her uncle of their predicament.

DJ Cleo is engaged

A year after getting his wife’s tattoo, DJ Cleo has confirmed he is an engaged man.

“I am engaged now. I am in a happy place‚” he said.

He was excited to get married but had decided to keep his personal life private. This is to protect those close to him.

“The world is mean and it is worse now. (Rapper) JR was blessed with a baby recently and it was so sad to see how people spun it to make fun of him‚ instead of celebrating with him. I also try to keep it private to not put people under pressure. You shouldn’t be scrutinised for just living life. At the end of the day‚ you just want those you love to live a normal life.”

Since being in the spotlight, DJ Cleo has  faced numerous rumours about his private life and sexuality. He said that he was unfazed by speculation and gossip about him.

“No matter how good a life you live‚ tabloids will even go to the point of cooking up stuff. It doesn’t bother me anymore. I know the real me and that’s all that matters. It is all speculation‚” he said.

Career

In his 15 year career, DJ Cleo said he had faced every kind of criticism.

“I have been called all kinds of things and mostly it is about my music and how it sucks. I sit back and look at my awards and think‚ ‘yeah maybe I do suck‚ that is why I have all of those awards.'”
