Nakhane Toure makes it to New York Times artists to watch in 2019 list

Nakhane Toure has been named as one of the 10 artists to watch out for in 2019. This is by The New York Times.

“The songs on his album You Will Not Die delve into both trauma and redemption. They ponder faith‚ pleasure‚ exile and belonging; they traverse hymns‚ neo-soul‚ South African pop and electronic dance music‚ and Nakhane’s voice crests in a vibrant‚ androgynous falsetto. Tenacity carries him toward joy‚” the paper wrote of him.

Nakhane thus took to Instagram to explain just how excited he felt. In his words, he was gagging at the news.

He was congratulated by a host of local stars including Bob Mabena‚ Atandwa Kani‚ Linda Mtoba‚ Lootlove and Moonchild.

The star caught the attention of Elton John and Madonna when he also made it to the cover of the British Vogue magazine. He performed at AfroPunk in Paris and again in New York, and the world sat up and took note.

Nakhane talks about his decision to leave Christianity

Nakhane recently shed some light on cutting off things that people may use to define him. For him, he is not bound by societal rules.

“The choices that I have made and decided to stick to‚ were choices that were maybe forced upon me by circumstances. So‚ for me‚ I could either be me or conform completely.”

Gave up Christianity

He gave up Christianity after he wanted to get in touch with his animal nature.

“I tried to conform. Before my first album came out I was a very conservative Christian. I really tried to snuff out my idiosyncrasies. I really did. I tried for like‚ five of six years‚ and then the volcano just erupted.”

It was a painful journey for Nakhane.

“It was unbelievably painful but I thought I was doing it for Jesus. I ended my relationship with Jesus Christ. We were happy for the first two years‚ but then I realised that there were other men out there. I mean‚ he does say he’s jealous. That’s never good‚” he said.

It is however recently that Nakhane realized just how different he is.

“I know that now and I’ve been meeting a lot of people. When you compare your decisions‚ which seem completely rational to you‚ and how people react to them‚ then you realise how different you are.”

Nakhane no longer living in fear

You may know Nakhane from his leading role in a film that almost cost him his life, Inxeba.

The controversial nature of the film saw Nakhane receive death threats. The film had been classified as porn, but the decision overturned last week.

“I see no reason why I should give those people who threatened me, and their hatred space for more advertising. For my own mental health, I don’t want to go back to that place.”

If asked to do a similar role, Nakhane would gladly accept it.

He now lives in the UK and is proudly gay.
