Robbie Malinga Family speaks on moving on after his death

During an interview with Channel 24 the Malinga’s  opened up on how they are doing after his demise.

Robbie Malinga widow  Ann (40), was joined by Robbie Malinga jr  and little sister Zanokuhle (3)

They’re learning to live without larger than-life Robbie, Ann says.

“All I can do right now is make sure I manage the household and try to take things one day at a time.”

Her life has been turned upside down since her husband’s untimely passing.

“I’m a single mom now. I don’t do much socialising, I’m always at home or with the kids,” she says.

Picking up the pieces of her life “definitely hasn’t been easy”, but Ann is grateful for the support of her family and a few close friends.

“I’ve also put all my trust in God to see me through.” And she knows she can rely on her son too. When Robbie’s health deteriorated he tried to prepare Robbie Jnr for the worst.

“He told me things are looking bad for him and if anything happens, I need to take care of the two women in the house because it’s my responsibility,” Robbie Jnr adds.

The other “woman” in the house is, of course, Zanokuhle. The toddler searches for something to nibble – until she finds a brownie – while her mother lets Robbie Jnr do the talking. Ann is reserved, but Robbie Jnr is confident and opens up easily.

Taking care of his mom and sister is a task he takes seriously, he says. “That’s all I care about right now.”

Her son has become her best friend and right-hand man, Ann says. He also helps her with family decisions: she wasn’t sure if it was the right time to open up about their loss until Robbie Jnr weighed in.

“I’m studying for my exams, but my mom asked if we should do the shoot and I said, ‘Yes, why not?’.” Mom and son are clearly close, yet it hasn’t stopped Ann’s parenting style from coming under fire following Robbie’s death.

Robbie Malinga son takes over his Instagram

Robbie Malinga’s son, Robbie Malinga jr., has taken over his late Dad Instagram account.

The 17-year-old can be seen showing off a fleet of cars  before stepping out of the luxury car and announcing his takeover of the Instagram account.

“Wassup? If you don’t know me now you know me. It’s Robbie Junior AKA Rob Mali and I’m moving in now. It’s verified boys, you know what the f**k going on…,” he says before telling people how he hopes they can be friends.

Robbie Malinga last song (Listen)

Just weeks before his death, music veteran Robbie Malinga sat across from afro-jazz sensation Naima Kay and gave her a gift, a song that would be the last he would ever record.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Naima explained how the pair had just finished recording a song for Robbie’s latest album when he told her that he had a special present for her.

“We had just finished recording when he told me that he had written a song for me. It was his last song, a goodbye song. He told me that he had filled in the chorus but that I should do the verses. I tried to protest but he said that he would not be around to hear it when it was released or to perform it with me, so I should record it on my own. He said: ‘I won’t be there when you perform it. I won’t be there to perform with you’. I didn’t understand what he meant but I knew when he died that it was a farewell gift for me.”

The song, entitled Shelang eData, features Robbie on backing vocals and is yet to be officially released. The song was performed on Live Amp last week and segments of the song were shared by Naima on social media over the last few days.

Robbie Malinga bid Naima Kay farewell with a gift

A few weeks before his death, Robbie Malinga gave afro-jazz sensation Naima Kay a gift. This was a song that became the last he would ever record.

On December 26th, Naima was to debut the song at a live show. However, she decided against that when she heard about the passing of Malinga.

“When I heard about Robbie’s death, I was broken. He was a father to me and took me under his wing. I did nit cope well and cried a lot. We were supposed to perform together at the event and he was now gone. Even on stage, I was not coping and if I had performed our song together I wouldn’t have been able to finish.”

Robbie Malinga R500K tombstone make headlines

Robbie Malinga was laid to rest at the beginning of 2018, however, a great deal of talk surrounded a statue of him which has been removed after coming under a lot of scrutiny.

The late, great, Robbie Malinga will be remembered fondly by many South Africans who enjoyed his work for decades. When someone as famous as he was passes away, it’s normal to expect them to be honoured with a monumental tombstone when they are laid to rest.

Over the years we’ve seen some pretty grand designs for gravestones, and the seven-ton, R500 000 monument for Robbie Malinga is the latest to grab headlines. The effigy was unveiled at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg on the 2nd of January, but it has since been removed after it drew plenty of criticism from thousands of South Africans on social media.

The biggest complaint was that the tombstone looked nothing like the singer, and the outcry was so loud that the CEO of Bataung Memorials (the company tasked with designing the monument) spoke out:

“We have seen the feedback on social media and have decided to remove the tombstone and redesign it based on that. People have pointed out that the features on the statue do not resemble Robbie 10
