Trevor Noah accused of racism

Trevor Noah has been accused of racism following a comment he made about Africa having won the world cup.

On hi The Daily Show, Trevor congratulated France but pointed out their victory was because of the number of black players on the team.

“I get it, they have to say it’s the French team,” Trevor said during the segment. “But look at those guys. You don’t get that tan by hanging out in the south of France, my friends.

“Basically if you don’t understand, France is Africans’ backup team. Once Senegal and Nigeria got knocked out, that’s who we root for.”

I don’t think the book is a product of myself, but rather me telling a story comprised of many stories. Part of it is South Africa’s story, part of it is my family’s story, my mother’s story, the lessons she taught me. Then, obviously, my interpretation of the world I was raised in.”

Watch: Trevor Noah speaks about his mother in interview with Oprah

Trevor Noah’s SuperSoul conversations interview with Oprah Winfrey aired last night.

He paid homage to his mother in a short video clip uploaded to the Oprah Winfrey Network’s YouTube channel.

Oprah started off by commenting on how “badass” Trevor’s mom was.

“Most people would have a sign to protest government oppression, my mother had me. In telling my story and writing this book, I never thought it was about my mom. I think most of us believe that we are the heroes of our story and in writing this story, I realised that I was my mother’s punk ass side-kick,” said Trevor.

When writing Born A Crime, Trevor didn’t intentionally set out to focus it around his mother. He was simply telling his life story.

“It’s funny how when you sit down and you come to realise the people who have shaped you and play a big role in who you are. And I can’t deny that my mother was that person for me, who stood up in a time when many people were afraid to stand up, when a country was being punished for standing up.”

His mother defied the apartheid system by standing firm on the way she wanted to live her life.

“She’s the example I lived my life by without realising the consequences. That for me is one of the most gangster human beings you can shape yourself on.”

The interview touched on Trevor’s memoir and politics in the States.

Through Comedy Central’s president Kent Alterman, it was announced that Trevor Noah has been renewed as the host of The Daily Show through 2022. He will also produce the year end Daily Show specials. With this renewal, Comedy Central proves it’s happy with Trevor’s work so far, and that it believes in his potential going forward. “Trevor makes us look smart on a daily basis and for that we are grateful.”

The renewal also means that Trevor will cover not only the midterm elections in 2018, but also the presidential election in 2020, which will undoubtedly be a crucial and contentious time for America. Like so many other comedians, Trevor found his groove as a late-night host during the 2016 election.
