From grass to grace! Larry Madowo reminisces about his days as a hawker

The story of Larry Madowo is a typical example of grass to grace; he has done all odd jobs (including selling mandazi in Gikomba) before he landed the lucrative TV job.

In his weekly column on Daily Nation (written in September), Larry narrated how his job at Equity bank still haunts him to date. The NTV news anchor says his position at the bank was that of a typical hawker though it was decorated to sound fancy and white collar-ish.

“A few months before I turned 20 years old, and beset by poverty, I took what is still my worst job to date. I was hired as a customer advisor for a major bank, a deliberately misleading title for a glorified hawker of the bank’s loans and credit cards.” Wrote Larry In part.

Larry further reveals he was fired from the job because he was terrible in sales job which required him to scavenge for new customers for the bank.

“I was among an army of sales representatives charged with finding new customers as well as cold-calling existing ones, telling them they had been ‘pre-approved’ for a credit card or an unsecured loan.

We were so many, that we were housed in two buildings with entire floors to ourselves. With hindsight, our leads only bit 10 per cent of the time, but that was often just sufficient to keep you on payroll if you could convince your team leader that you’d do better the following month. I was so bad at being a banker at the tail end of the food chain, which I quit after four months. Before they fired me. Ironically, I ended up as a business reporter just a year later, covering the same industry I failed in, after selling products that nobody wanted.” [sic]

Larry Madowo narrates how Lupita Nyong’o threw him out of an interview after he asked her annoyingly ridiculous questions

Larry Madowo has interviewed loads of celebrities ever since he took over the Trend; he has exposed newsmakers who have uncouth behaviors that the public didn’t know about.

As 2016 comes to an end, Larry Madowo decided to share his experience of interviewing and interacting with celebrities throughout the year.

He was full of praise for South African jazz star Hugh Masekela, British-Nigerian actor David Oyelowo, Trey Songz, Aloe Blacc, Victor Wanyama, Mafikizolo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Yemi Alade, Tinie Tempah and Jose Chameleone.

The NTV anchor described the named celebrities as extremely cheerful and friendly persons; he said they have a placid disposition that is totally awesome.

But Larry didn’t have nice words to say for the likes of David Rudisha, Lupita Nyong’o, Jimmy Gait, Koffi Olomide, Flavour, Sinach and Nyashinski.

He revealed his last interview with Lupita Nyong’o in Kampala ended in disarray when he asked her whether she had a narcissistic personality disorder.

“I was back in Kampala for a show in late September when I heard that the Oscar-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o, was in town to premiere her new film, ‘Queen of Katwe’. I made a few calls and got an interview. Traffic was horrendous that Sunday because of a huge festival that was taking place in the middle of the city, so I jumped onto a boda boda to get to her. Like all the other journalists at the junket, Disney gave each of us just 15 minutes. In her room, Lupita was sitting between co-stars Madina Nalwanga, 16, and her on-screen son, Martin Kabanza.“We like your ugali video,” I told her as we settled down, referring to a Vogue-produced clip where she learns to cook the Kenyan staple from her mother. “You put me in a lot of trouble,” she responded with a smile. She had confessed to me in a previous interview that she missed ugali but didn’t know how to make it, which set Kenyan social media alight. She was detached and appeared bored throughout the rest of the interview, which prompted some to say she didn’t value African presenters, compared with her American appearances. The interview ended abruptly when I asked about reports that she was a prima donna and I was ushered out without a picture.” Larry Madowo wrote in part.

The NTV anchor said the likes of Jimmy Gait and Nyashinski were drama kings who cancelled interviews with him through text messages and stopped answering calls.

“Others like David Rudisha, who has consistently refused to do the show with an ever-expanding list of excuses. Even that is still better than Jimmy Gait, who cancelled last October in a text message to producer Kevin Gitau, then refused to answer calls.

Then there are those who are booked in advance but decline to come on when they land in Nairobi, like Koffi Olomide, or Nigerian artistes Flavour and Sinach. Well before he got deported for his airport drama, Olomide just couldn’t be bothered to honour an invite. Flavour reportedly had drama with immigration officers when he arrived that ruined his mood while Sinach wouldn’t leave her hotel room.

Every so often, there is also a guest like Nyashinski who confirms, then stops answering calls and ends up on another station station.”

Tabia Mbaya! Larry Madowo bashed for allowing youths to thrust each other on National Television (Video)

For those who missed out on The trend this past Friday, then allow me to say you missed out on some lit episode.

However, Larry Madowo landed himself in trouble after airing a show that might have contained explicit content, pushing parents to think that he is a bad influence to the youth.

Well, this started after the youths featured in the Friday show were seen thrusting against each other to burst balloons in the ‘balloon challenge’ game. Both the ladies and men were to expected to pop a balloon the ‘doggystyle’ way.

However, parents on social media were quick to condemn the game that was dirty and too sexual for the young ones watching the show and also the ones who participated in the game. Judging from the social media posts, many were not impressed watching young kids show off their thrust game on air.

Despite being a harmless game, most social media users are disappointed that Larry Madowo would air such petty things just for ratings.

Anyway, below is the video courtesy of The Trend.

Linus Kaikai And Shaffie Weru Watch A Born Again Larry Madowo Take Two Heavy Blow Jobs At An Italian Bar (Evidence)

Everybody knows Larry Madowo DOESN’T drink! But last night he quaffed booze at an Italian bar as Linus Kaikai and liquor guzzler Shaffie Weru watched!

NTV Managing Editor Linus Kaikai, Kiss FM presenter Shaffie Weru and Larry Madowo flew to Milan, Italy to watch Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid in Champions League final tonight.

The three A-list celebrities had time to visit an Italian bar where they got refreshed with a special Italian cocktail called Pompinos which is popularly referred to as ‘blow job’ in Italy.

Larry took two blow jobs and he got wasted like crazy. The ruby-colored cocktail is thought to have hallucinogenic effects, according to locals in Milan.

And true to this belief, Larry uttered incoherent words after sipping the Italian blow job. He was later seen drinking wine as Shaffie cheered him on.

The NTV journalist managed to get to his hotel room where he passed out. Larry was recording his escapade in Milan on his phone.
