Answers to Five questions asked by graduates about jobs

The employment world is a crazy one, especially in this country. Here are answers to five questions asked by graduates about jobs.

Are papers enough? No! The papers only get you shortlisted. Many people think that their various qualifications will get them past an interview panel. Your personality, communication skills, and ability to express yourself is what gets one onto the job. When you are shortlisted, the employer already knows what you are qualifies in. The interview is just to look for that unique quality. Learn to build your personality and social life outside education. 90% of the questions asked at the panel are to assess your skills to express yourself, handle situations, and solve problems.

Can I get Hired Without a Transcript?Yes! There are many myths people pass around, that you need to wait until you get your transcript to apply, and get a job. This is not true. Apply for jobs months before you leave the University. It is God that provides employment. I know a number of people who have gotten work on merit, even before graduation.

Is a Cover letter more important than a CV? No! I would say they could be equally important, but your CV is what gets you hired. It is what communicates the type of person you are and what you want from the opportunity. Majority of people are judged from their Resume. You can tell whether a worker will stay longer, or is just a looking for a temporary fast job. You can also tell how willing they are, to work in different conditions.

Is experience Necessary? Yes! The importance of experience is that it puts you ahead of most of the people you are competing with for the job. The experience you have also shows how interested you are in a particular line. An internship with an NGO upcountry can secure you a job with an NGO later on. A few sales and advertising short jobs can get you a job with a commodity company. Do not be afraid to take risks, either at the University, or outside. Participate and engage yourself in workshops, training, campaigns, competitions, debates, etc.

Job Creation is important? Yes! The paradigm now is to create your own jobs and employ people. It is important to think outside the box. There are various opportunities out there waiting for you. The money is there. The internet is full of such opportunities. Even the employed, still look for ways of setting up a side income generating opportunity.
