Retired Sergent Kifulugunyu is dead

Sad news just hit our desks at Ghafla, that the brains and talent behind the legendary song, “Omoto Nawaka” has just passed on. Sergent (rtd) Steven Sempagala, commonly known as Kifulugunyu was a soldier with the UPDF army, and had a significant contribution, one of them being, composing teamwork and determination songs for his team, during the NRA bush war.

The famous song, ‘Omoto nawaka’ was composed by him in 1984 after joining NRA rebels. He fought wars, was imprisoned, and also managed to bring the team to success, because of his morale boosting hits. The late Kifulugunyu spent 44 years as a soldier, and retired in 2008, when he was the Warrant Officer Class I.

May His soul rest in peace

In his last interview with the New Vision Uganda, Kifulugunyu  mentioned that his life has not been good after retirement from the government. He further added that most of his time was spent  in wars, eating and sleeping poorly hoping for a reward from the Government he served for 44 years.

“My mistake was to love my country so much that I give it my all without saving any energies for my future? I was so disciplined that I did not engage in looting or grabbing people’s property the way other soldiers did. Unfortunately this has left me a sad, miserable retirement” he mentioned.

He was very grateful for his life, and suggested that this was his greatest success. Thank you for your service Sergent.

May his soul rest in peace, and may the Lord comfort his family.
