Just as the world was about to contend with the fact that Prince was no more,the unexpected happened, Papa Wemba, another musical legend passed. Papa who is famous for taking Lingala to the world collapsed while performing at Festival Des Musiques Urbaines D’Anoumabo in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

This is a sad calamity for the whole of Africa and while we join the rest of the world in mourning the legend, here are 7 things you probably didn’t know about the man:

He was 66 years old at the time of his death. He was born in 1949 his real name being Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba.

He was a father of 6.

In 2004 he was convicted and jailed for 3 months after being associated to an immigrant scandal in France. Apparently people planning to escape war tone Congo into Europe used to pay to masquerade as band members.

He first started as a religious artiste having being a notable contributor to religious choirs.His inspiration to become a singer came from his mother who was a professional wailing woman in funerals.

He was among the first musicians to join the influential Soukuus band, Zaiko Langa Langa.

He was also the man who brought to the limelight yet another Congolese maestro, Koffi Olomide. Koffi used to write his songs for the longest time.
