After being wounded by assailants, a Nairobi lawyer is in critical condition

A High Court advocate is currently battling for his life in the hospital after being attacked and shot by gunmen on his way back to the city on the morning of Sunday, January 28.

Anthony Gathitu Kabathi, a lawyer affiliated with the Kabuthi and Company Advocates law firm in Nairobi, was returning to Nairobi from a client meeting in Garissa when the ambush occurred along the Isiolo-Modogashe Road.

The incident took place near Laga Logo, about five kilometers from a police camp, known for being an area frequented by marauding bandits.

Upon receiving a distress call from the public, the police responded to find a man bleeding in a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 that had veered off the road and stalled in a bush.

The lawyer suffered severe gunshot wounds to his chest, left hand, thumb, and left side of his abdomen during the ambush.

Responding General Service Unit officers discovered the victim’s car doors and boot open, and the driver injured. It is believed that he was also robbed of an undisclosed amount of money and other valuables.

The officers, equipped with a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, conducted a search in the area, administered first aid to the lawyer, and then transported him to Isiolo Galaxy Hospital. Plans were underway to airlift him to Nairobi.

In August 2023, bandits killed six people on the outskirts of Garissa town, including a taxi driver and five passengers, two of whom were students. The victims were en route to the border town of Holugho when the bandits launched the attack.
