Why bloggers need to take what is happening to Edgar Obare seriously

Edgar Obare has been arrested and interrogated by officers from the DCI which has served to remind me of a poem by Martin Neimöller which I feel is something bloggers and indeed, journalists need to be educated on or reminded of:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Edgar Obare has been the recipient of the state’s famous hospitality on several other episodes and for some reason, this has not made bloggers wisen up and realize that there is strength in numbers.

What influencers should learn from Yummy Mummy’s beef with Edgar Obare

I get it, theirs is a competitive craft and it is made even less amiable by the fact that there are alot of egos involved (I have a mentor who set up Mpasho and he told me this) but my word, at some point, every blogger needs to suspend their ego inorder to survive.

Edgar Obare alleged that he had been kidnapped by people who identified themselves as members of the disciplined forces

You see, it is clear to see that our politicians and the people in power have an axe to grind with Edgar Obare in particular but this extends to every other blogger in Kenya. That is why Aden Duale is trying to pass a Draconian and straight-up stupid pornography bill that would essentially give anyone in possession of sextapes, nudes and sexts stiffer punishments and penalties than capital offences such as terrorism.

The Edgar Obare conundrum and lack of trust Kenyans have in the police force

Edgar Obare is the first to be targeted by the state and I am of the opinion this bill is meant to reign him in but make no mistake about it, he isn’t the last. And I understand why alot of people and bloggers are experiencing schadenfreude seeing Edgar Obare get persecuted by the state. He is pompous and often talks down to his peers but never ever sing and dance as you watch the man get crushed by the state machinery.

Microblogger Edgar Obare in happier times

Edgar Obare should infact be a rallying cry for bloggers. And hopefully, bloggers realize this before he becomes a martyr. The man has been kidnapped, the man has been brutalized. Are we waiting for his body to turn up or for his remains to never be seen again before we boot up our indignation chips?

“They beat me and took pictures of my penis” Edgar Obare cries after hours of suffering in the hands of the Kenya Police

Make no mistake about it (I have said that alot in this piece), the powerful people hiding behind state machinery to frustrate and humiliate him are not your friends nor are they seeking anything other than vengeance. These pocket tyrants will turn on the citizenry when they are done neutralizing Edgar.
