Hassan Wario’s reckless statement proves costly to Kenyan sports

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Wario has caused a stir with his reckless talk.

The Sports CS dared gaming companies to cut off funding in sports oblivious of the dare repercussions if the same was to happen.

Wario’s statement rubbed Kenyans the wrong way sparking condemnations from the youth who implored Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) to take action against him.

The Sport CS has been at the center of numerous scandals top being Rio Olympic mess which saw his impeachment motion tabled in parliament by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.

Top officials in the Sports ministry embezzled Kes 88 million meant for air tickets to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games creating a big mess that was even reported by international news outlets like the BBC.

The fact that Wario is even daring gaming companies to stop funding sports activities in Kenya only confirms his incompetence and insincerity to the Kenyan youth. Does the Sport CS even know that a Kenyan all-stars team played English Premier League (EPL) side Hull City for the first time in the country’s history? And all this was facilitated by a gaming company?

Kenyan teams have experienced a litany of embarrassing situations where they had to beg for funds to represent the country in international competitions, and most occasions it’s the gaming companies that come to aid. And yet Sports CS wants gaming companies to stop funding sports?

The intriguing question most Kenyans would ask – has Kenyan sports really achieved anything under Sports Minister Hassan Wario?
