Meet Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira, the first African to own a car in Kenya. His first salary was 4 bob a month

Very little is known about Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira but he’s a man with a rich history.

Now at 104 years, he was the first African Kenyan to own a car. An Austin which he co-bought with a friend for a whopping 300 bob; quite a fortune back then.

According to Jambonewspot which first aired his story, his first job was at Mathari Catholic coffee plantation where he used to work as a casual labourer where his take home salary was Ksh 4 per month.

He had an entrepreneurial mind so he used to invest the money in goats which he later sold and relocated to Nairobi to look for better pastures in the mid 1920’s.

There he secured another job with Kenya Planters Co-operative Union where his salary was 20 bob and it has been nothing but an upward trajectory for the man.

Now Gerald Gikonyo Kanyuira is a fully fledged business man with various investments in Real Estate, agriculture and hospitality.

He’s also a proud father of 23 children, uncountable grand children all products of his 4 wives with 3 having passed away.
