Former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji was sworn in as the new Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

The ceremony was held at State House, Nairobi, and was presided over by President William Ruto.

Haji succeeds Major-General (Rtd) Philip Wachira Kameru, who has held the position for over eight years.

In his remarks, President Ruto said that Haji was a seasoned prosecutor with a proven track record of fighting corruption and other forms of crime.

He said that Haji was the right person to lead the NIS at a time when the country was facing a number of security challenges.

“I am confident that Noordin will use his vast experience and expertise to steer the NIS to greater heights,” President Ruto said.

Haji thanked the President for the appointment and pledged to work hard to protect the country from its enemies.

“I am humbled by the trust that the President has bestowed on me,” Haji said. “I promise to work hard to ensure that the NIS is able to fulfill its mandate of protecting the country from its enemies.”

Haji is a graduate of the University of Nairobi and the Kenya School of Law. He worked as a prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for over 15 years.

In 2018, he was appointed DPP by President Uhuru Kenyatta. As DPP, Haji oversaw the prosecution of a number of high-profile cases, including the case against former National Youth Service (NYS) Director General Richard Ndubai.

Haji’s appointment as NIS Director General is seen as a major boost for the agency, which has been criticized for its failure to prevent a number of terror attacks in recent years.

Haji is expected to use his experience and expertise to improve the NIS’s intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities. He is also expected to work closely with other security agencies to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
