Co-op Banks records a 56% Growth with Ksh7.7B Profit in First Quarter

Co-op Bank Group is pleased to report a Profit Before Tax of Kshs. 7.78 Billion for the first quarter of 2022, a commendable 56% growth compared to Kshs. 4.98 Billion recorded in the first quarter of 2021.

This represents a strong Profit after Tax of Kshs. 5.8 Billion compared to Kshs. 3.5 Billion reported in 2021. The performance delivers a competitive Return on Equity of 23.8% to our shareholders.

The strong performance by the Bank is in line with the Group’s strategic focus on sustainable growth, resilience, and agility.

Key highlights;

Financial Position: The Group has registered sustained growth as follows;

Total Assets grew to Kshs. 597.0 Billion, a +8% growth from Kshs 552.9 Billion in the same period last year.

Net loans and advances grew to Kshs. 324.5 Billion, a +9% growth from Kshs.298.2 Billion.

Investment in Government securities grew to Kshs. 183.4 Billion, a +10% rise from Kshs. 166.2 Billion in 2021.

Customer deposits grew to Kshs 410.8 Billion, a +4% increase from Kshs. 393.8 Billion.

External funds from development partners stood at Kshs 43.3 Billion from Kshs.46.9 Billion in 2021.

Shareholders’ funds grew to Kshs. 102.7 Billion, a +10% increase from Kshs. 93.7 Billion in 2021 enabling us to continue pitching for big ticket deals.

Comprehensive Income

Total operating income grew by 17% from Kshs 14.4 Billion to Kshs 16.8 Billion.

Total non-interest income grew by 41.7% from Kshs 4.5 Billion to Kshs 6.4 Billion.

Net interest income grew by 6% from Kshs 9.8 Billion to Kshs 10.4 Billion.

Total operating expenses declined by 3% from Kshs 9.3 Billion to Kshs. 9.0 Billion.

Cost Management

Excellent gains from our various initiatives with a Cost Income ratio of 44.6% in Q12022 from 59% in FY2014 when we began our Growth & Efficiency journey.

Credit Management remains a key focus area by way of the following interventions;

The Credit Risk Adaptation Project dubbed ‘Project Kilele’ supported by a Global consulting firm, now in the implementation phase.

The Decentralization of Loan Portfolio Management to the Branches, Lending Units and Relationship Management teams. The successful project, aimed at enhancing collection activities, has advanced to Project Connect & Build (CB). The project is aimed at:
Identifying more business opportunities for loan book growth.

Engaging existing & potential customers with a view to establishing/enhancing their needs and co-create solutions.

The Group prudentially provided Kshs. 1.5 Billion compared to Kshs 2.3 billion provided in 2021 indicating improving quality of our asset book as businesses and households continue to recover from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic.

Our Gross Non-Performing Loan (NPL) Book has reduced by 5% from last year, with our NPL ratio improving to 13.3% against 15.2% in a similar period last year. This affirms our Credit Quality and Growth strategies and will continue to improve to single digit pre-pandemic NPL levels.

A Strong Digital Footprint

Through our digital channel strategy, the Bank has successfully moved 94% of all customer transactions to alternative delivery channels, an expanded 24-hour contact centre, mobile banking, 541 ATMs, internet banking and over 27,000 Co-op Kwa Jirani agency banking terminals.

We have successfully migrated our customers to the Omni-channel, integrating accessibility and user experience. Our omnichannel interfaces online banking through personal computers, mobile phones and USSD availing our services to all customers through their preferred channel yet retain the same experience from wherever they are.

A successful Universal Banking model and the implementation of Sales Force Effectiveness has seen the Group serve 9 million Account holders across all sectors.

Key focus on digital banking, with the all-telco Mco-op Cash Mobile Wallet continuing to play a pivotal role in the growth of non-funded income with 5 Million customers registered and loans worth Kshs 19.9 Billion disbursed year-to-date, averaging over Kshs. 6.6 Billion per month.
Over 151,500 customers have taken up the MSME packages that we rolled out in 2018, and 23,363 have been trained on business management skills.

Year to date, we have disbursed Kshs. 4.3 Billion to MSMEs through our Mobile E-Credit solution. MSMEs are a critical part of economic recovery post-covid and contribute up to 16% of our total Loan Book.

Our unique model of retail banking services through Sacco FOSAs enabled us provide wholesale financial services to over 464 FOSA outlets.

Subsidiaries

Co-op Consultancy & Bancassurance Intermediary Ltd posted a Profit Before Tax of Kshs 316.9 Million as at 31st March 2022, riding on strong penetration of Bancassurance business.

Co-operative Bank of South Sudan that is a unique joint venture (JV) partnership with Government of South Sudan (Co-op Bank 51% and GOSS 49%) returned a profit of Kshs 43.9 Million in Q12022 compared to a loss of Kshs 89.1 million in Q12021.

Co-op Trust Investment Services contributed Kshs. 53.7 Million in Profit Before Tax in Q12022, with Funds Under Management of Kshs. 190.2 Billion compared to Kshs. 128.4 Billion in March 2021.

Kingdom Bank Limited (A Niche MSME Bank) has contributed a Profit Before Tax of Kshs. 199.3 Million in Q12022 compared Kshs. 126.7 Million reported last year representing a 57% Growth year on year.

Long Term Financing: MSME, Sustainable Agriculture & Health sectors.

In 2020 the Group secured a long-term financing facility from the IFC (International Finance Corporation) amounting to Kshs. 8.25 Billion for on-lending at affordable terms to MSMEs involved notably in climate-smart projects, sustainable agricultural practices, and clean energy.

Partnered in the US$ 300 million IFC-led Africa Medical Equipment Facility and Philips (a leading health technology company) to support Africa’s health sector operators purchase essential medical equipment and strengthen their response to COVID-19 and other medical technology needs.

The Group secured a US$ 10 Million credit line in partnership with Eco.business Fund to finance Sustainable Agriculture.

Environmental Social and Governance (ESG)
The Bank has a dedicated ESG Unit that will see the enhancement of our ESG strategies as we take up emerging opportunities and manage ESG risks.

Co-op Trust Investment Services contributed Kshs. 92.3 Million in Profit Before Tax in Q32021, with Funds Under Management standing at Kshs. 187.1 Billion compared to Kshs. 123.7 Billion as at Q32020.

Kingdom Bank Limited (formerly Jamii Bora Bank) has contributed a Profit Before Tax of Kshs. 413 Million in Q32021. This is compared to 2020 full year loss of Kshs. 124 Million.

The unbelievable story of an hyena that bit off a soldier’s finger while in camp at Athi River

This is a true story.

Not so long ago, before the SGR snaked its way across the Athi River, a company of soldiers is out and about in a routine training exercise.

A training exercise is not a walk in the park. By evening, the soldiers can barely walk. The body aches. The stomach rumbles and the throat is parched. The sun doesn’t play in these streets.

So, one evening after a long, rumbling trek, the squad stumbles into camp. The first stop is the kitchen area. Basically, a few trenches with a lit fire – huge boiling cauldrons.

Thankfully – there’s always a hot meal waiting.

There’s a ton of Ugali. Lots of fried meat. It’s all laid out on tables, buffet-style. Just so you know, the military invented the buffet.

The starving squad digs in.

Then, each soldier crawls to their tent. If you haven’t been in a tent, it’s just an overpriced invite to spend a night in the open. No walls.

They slump into bed, military fatigues, soiled boots and all. A few, naturally, forget the little matter of washing hands after the dinner meat session.

Now, Athi River is home to loads of wildlife. In this story, marauding hyenas and wild dogs come into play.

They like military camps – loads of left over food – especially meat. A military camp is deathly silent in the dead of night. This is the time the scavengers rule. Packs run the length of the camp, sniffing for discarded morsels of food.

They have a keen sense of smell. They’ll even sniff meat-stained fingers.

That’s a first hand story, as told by a soldier whose fingers got gnawed off by a hyena in the plains of Athi River.

I suppose every kid wants to be a soldier at some point. And almost every other teen. Its glamorous, and enviable. As it is, not everyone makes the cut. And not everyone deserves the cut.

Because it’s a life of endless, thankless sacrifice.

Spending nights in waterlogged trenches – swatting angry mosquitoes. Camping for months in remote wastelands – no cellphone coverage.

Meeting and talking to the same people, every single day, for months on end. Eating the same meals, on clockwork.

At some point, you realise that you know your comrade more than you know your own spouse.

The constant travel for assignments and impromptu exercises have a toll on family life.

A soldier hardly ever attends family functions.

You’ll get a new born – but you don’t get to know of it. You have pitched camp in some forsaken dumpland without a single bar of nework.

Your favorite niece got married sometimes over Easter. When you finally get home on that short week off, you’ll be regaled with funny tales on how Uncle Njenga aced her dowry negotiations.

She fetched a few camels, over and above a tidy sum of currency. He was clearly the GOAT.

Except, the GOAT uncle had passed on a few weeks earlier. You didn’t hear of it. It hurts for a moment.

Slayqueen drama as online girlfriend invades bachelor’s bedsitter on Forest Road

A new relationship? It’s like walking in the woods after dark.

There’s a lot of bumping into strange new things. There’s no knowing what kind of surprises lurk in the shadows of their partner’s personality.

Maina, fondly known as Maish – lives in a bedsitter in a residential block along Forest Road. It’s a bit cramped and pricey, but worth it. Shiny tiles, functional hot shower head, and close to his work place. He walks. Life has been pretty cool, till Brenda waltzed into his life.

Maish is now in a quagmire.

He met Brenda met on Facebook. The usual way. She liked posting memes. Maish first responded with emojis. Laughing emojis.

In between, she’d drop a selfie – and she was striking – filters notwithstanding. She had dimples, man. Dude graduates, emoji-wise. The love emoji. Red is a warm color.

Then he slid into her DM. He gets her Whatsapp number. They start chatting. Meaningless, at first.

How chilly is Nyandarua? Maish would want to know if it snowed there in July 1998.

Do you love chips? They are called fries, she’d remind him.

Can you operate a wheelbarrow? She confided that her dad owns 8 wheelbarrows.

Maish didn’t think it an engineering marvel that needed any sort of certification. Plus, he deemed himself an hustler.

He shares his grand life plan: save half of his salary to set up a business. He planned to buy a fleet of trollies to sell sausages and eggs on road intersections.

Brenda challenges him: Defend your thesis.

Easy. He’d rattled off a list – no overheads like rent, and council licensing. Profits are double-double. It seemed waterproof. He’d asked what she was doing.

Brenda says she’s a fresh graduate. Has a teaching degree from Maseno. But she intimates that she doesn’t look forward to a stint as a TSC employee.

She nails it further with a solemn declaration: Not even if ‘they tripled salaries’ at TSC.

Well, Maish had a rather noble regard for high school teachers. Brenda had started an online fashion business in campus. It had turned out rather well. She’d rattle off figures she’d achieved as profits. In campus.

If it wasn’t for her mother’s fragile heart, she’d have dropped out.

Maish was falling in love. Here’s an hustler. In the flesh – not just some hyped political rhetoric. He asked for a date, on her next resupply run to the city. She didn’t promise ‘anything’.

One Friday, Maish is at work. He receives a call from Brenda. She’s in town, she’d come in for some new stock. Maish says he cannot get off work in time – no worry, she’d be happy to come over see him at his place.

What? For real? Dude’s heart is racing. A lot can go wrong for a first meeting. He starts ticking off the list in his head.

Did I flush the toilet this morning?

Did I get my dirty boxers off the coffee table? No, he’s still in them.

He feigns headache and gets off work half an hour earlier. He sprints home. Other than a flooded room, all is well. He’d forgotten to close the taps that morning. But he didn’t have a carpet, nothing to worry about.

Brenda arrives in a cab. That’s impressive,

Maish thinks. Not so much, though, when he started hauling up bales and cartons to the 8th floor. Brenda had a ton of luggage. It’s my new stock, babe. He blushes, she giggles – oops, I just called you babe. He gets a spring in his step.

Back in the bedsitter, there’s barely enough space left to breath. Or, fart. He’d had matoke and guacamole for lunch. Maish squeezes next to her on his two-seater. To break the ice, he asked her why they call an avocado, ‘guacamole’.

She didn’t hear him.

Brenda was busy. She had a phone on each hand. She was checking her social media accounts.

“Babe, am getting hits. How far is USIU from here” She asks.

If his life depended on it, Maish would have died on that day. He didn’t have a clue where USIU was – or what USIU stood for. Before he could figure it out, she was calling someone.

It was a boda boda guy. Yaani, barely ten minutes in his bedsitter, she had a boda boda guy.

“Babe, fungua hio box pale….no, no, si hio…this one. I marked it. Check for a pink kimono dress”.

Brenda is pointing with her phone to a box on the bed. It’s in the bottom row.

“Msee wa boda is coming to pick it. He’s delivering to USIU in the next few.” She says.

She speaks in a fast staccato – hardly the ‘memes girl’ Maish had imagined. He hefts and heaves on the boxes. A pink something, and something chiffon.

Brenda hands him the package.

“Babe! Hurry up! Go downstairs and give it to the boda guy at the gate. Thanks, babe”.

Maish runs down the stairs, gripping the rails.

The last time he did this, the KPLC guy was threatening to disconnect his power meter. The previous occupant of his bedsitter had ‘doctored’ the meter’.

He finds the delivery guy, hands over the package. He just rides off.

As Maish labors up the stairs, he’s in a dilemma. He realises living on 8th floor is not wise. Then, have we just been robbed?

He gets in. Mumbles something about the bike guy not giving him any money.

“Baaaaabe, don’t worry. That’s just a delivery guy. My clients pay online. Tushalipwa!” She says, hugging him. As he holds her, he smells her weave. It’s an expennsive synthetic. He could feel two phones in her hands digging into his back.

Co-op Bank secures Ksh 8.25 billion MSME financing from International Finance Corporation (IFC)

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has secured a long-term financing facility arranged by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) amounting to US$ 75 million (Sh 8.25 Billion) for on-lending to MSMEs at affordable terms.

The long term loan has a tenure of 7 years, coming in as Tier II Supplementary Capital.

Co-op Bank will apply the proceeds to of the facility to support customers to better cope with the disruptions brought about by the pandemic.

Specifically, the facility is intended to support customers operating in the following key business areas;

  • Micro, Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs),
  • Businesses undertaking Climate Smart Projects, including Agricultural inputs and sustainable agricultural practices, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and related areas.

Commenting upon the signing of the loan agreement, Co-op Bank Group Managing Director & CEO Dr. Gideon Muriuki said:

“The funding has come at a most opportune time as it boosts our ability to better support our MSME customers to stabilise and turn-around their businesses to meet the challenges brought about by the pandemic.”

Co-op Bank has leveraged its strong balance sheet with total assets at over Sh 510 Billion (as at 30 September 2020) and the IFC facility will substantially enhance the bank’s opportunities for growth and overall performance as here under;

As we usher in fun December in style, what’s your funniest X-mas family story?

Oh, it’s December already.

Suddenly, those memes start to make sense.

“You go out in slippers and shorts to get mandazi for breakfast, and return home at midnight, sloshed and incoherent”.

Yes, this is the month it happens.

For ethical reasons, I couldn’t share the link to this story here – so here’s a copy paste version.

If you look at our family’s photos for Christmas 2016, you’ll notice that in each group photo, there’s always 3 or 4 people yawning.

Uncanny, huh?

Well, my extended family’s tradition is that each of my dad’s sibling hosts the Christmas feast on a rotational basis.

In 2016, we were marking Christmas in Uncle Mutua’s home in Nyali, Mombasa.

He’s the eldest son in my dad’s family. A day or two before X-mas, he’d booked each of his sibling’s family in assorted hotels around Nyali, all within 15 minutes’ drive to his home.

My dad is the second born, and so had been tasked to marshal everyone to keep time on X-mas Day, and have everyone arrive at Uncle Mutua’s home on time.

My Dad had a watch that showed different times for different time zones across the world, a feature he’d enjoy showing off to everyone at dinner.

On that X-mas Day, we still know not what time zone his watch had been set.

He shakes us awake, then calls every other uncle and commands a tentative arrival at the host’s house in quarter of an hour. No questions asked.

When we drive out of the hotel, there’s barely anyone in the street. Not even stray dogs.

Surprisingly, everyone turns up at Uncle Mutua’s drive way – in 15 minutes. Luckily, Mombasa ain’t freezing in December.

We knock at the door at 5:15 AM.

My aunt opens the door, and groggily grunts: “Oh. The family is here.”

Her tone, well, didn’t sound much Christmassy.

Kind of like, “Oh. It’s cancer”.

On every picture that day there are like four people yawning.

The first question is, will you be purchasing directly from a builder or buying the land yourself and building from scratch?

How an unlikely defendant in a ruffled blazer outsmarts a cocky prosecutor at Milimani Law Courts and escapes jail

This is not my story. But, am mighty glad it ain’t.

If you haven’t been to Milimani Law Courts, it’s a place that draws out the serious, sober bit.

We are in court for a hearing on a burglary case. It’s a default hearing, so, we are at the back of the court room. We get to sit through oddball corruption and murder cases, some of which I’ve seen make angry Twitter threads.

We hear cases that make our case seem like chicken feed.

I was particularly in awe of the presiding judge. It’s almost bipolar how she’d shift from dismissing cases to handing out death and life in prison sentences.

Just before our case is called, a Police Inspector – in uniform – comes in. Shortly, a tall guy in a fitting Italian suit follows. He’s a junior prosecutor at the court. They had a Driving Under Influence (DUI) hearing scheduled.

The accused driver is an old guy, in a ruffled coat and a slouching gait. He wobbles to the defendants table, silently. The prosecutor leads the Inspector through a practiced litany of why he’d seen it fit to pull over the driver, on Kiambu Road.

The Inspector intimates that the driver was a known prior offender. He says he’d seen him miss the yellow line a few times on the run just past the DCI Headquarters. The driver then, in the cop’s opinion, failed, or at least did not pass the sobriety test.

All this while, the accused just stands there with an expression of someone who’d rather be tending goats.

When I ask, I’m told this hearing is to establish if probable cause existed to proceed.

The Italian-suited prosecutor looks over at the defendant and in the most dramatic, haughty and contemptuous tone, asks:

“Do YOU have any questions?”

The lady judge affords the man a few moments, and in the last possible second before she drops the gavel, the old man speaks up.

“Yes, Your Honor, I have a few questions.”

It gets interesting.

The slouching old man, suddenly draws himself up, clears his throat, and in a voice that could silence opinionated television political analysts, says:

“Deputy, did I hear you state that you pulled the defendant over because you recognized him as a prior offender, and because he crossed over the yellow line once or twice?”

The prosecutor and the judge suddenly take notice, and a trace of concern steals across the prosecutor’s face. The defendant assumes the third person narration, and is visibly confident enough in front of a Judge.

The Deputy thinks for a second, and replies:

“Well, yes, defendant. That’s you, Mwaniki. Two years ago, you had a similar DUI conviction, and you are a regular in several pubs on Thika Road.”

Mwaniki, nods.

“So, the Defendant’s history of a DUI conviction was a contributing factor in your determination as to whether to pull him over or not?”

The Inspector nods, and, in a less convincing voice replies:

“Yes, or course it was.”

The defendant continues:

“Since you stopped me in the middle of the day, and as your report says,” here Mwaniki holds up a copy of his charges, “nowhere near any of my regular pubs on Thika Road, Inspector, would you say your knowledge of the defendant’s prior conviction was a significant contributor in your decision to pull the defendant over?”

The inspector, now not as cocky, sputters out:

“I just said it was.”

Mwaniki looks at the attentive judge up on her desk.

“So, had you not known who the driver was, there was little chance that you would have pulled the vehicle over based upon the driver’s behavior. Is that a correct characterization?”

The Inspector pauses for a second, and says: “Yes”.

Mwaniki turns to the Judge, and says:

“Your Honor, I move to dismiss these charges as the State has failed to field a prima facie case. Their witness cannot provide articulable probable cause.”

Unexpectedly, for a judge who just dished out a decade-long sentence barely half an hour back – and before the junior prosecutor could tell what’s happening – the judge nods, and says:

“Mwaniki, I get your impression. The Inspector wouldn’t have pulled you over had he not known you were the driver. There’s no probable cause. The DUI case dismissed. However, if in retrospect you weren’t under influence and weaved over the yellow line, that’s an offence. The court fines you ONE HUNDRED shillings. If you can pay, you are free to leave.”

Mwaniki resumes his old man persona and limps out of the courtroom. No orderly even escorts him to the cash offices.

Well, I’m convinced to listen, and it’s a heck of a story.

A few months ago, a rather poor couple moved in next door to me. I live in Likoni, some place called Bondeni.

They were native Kisii’s – and you know how friendly Kisii’s tend to be. No, it’s not stereotyping. It’s just what it is. A few days in, we are friends and they tell me how they eloped from their Nyakemincha village. The guy’s extended family disallowed their relationship – citing distant clan relations.

We grew close.

This is a couple out in the urban jungle with no contact from their relations in the village. But, thankfully, the girl’s family wasn’t so held up on who she chose to date or cohabit with.

It happens that the girl grew up with her maternal grandmother, and she wanted to show her the beach ‘before she died’.

Fair enough.

So my neighbors book their elderly grandma a seat in one of the night buses from Kisii. She travels safe, and they pick her at dawn from Mwembe Tayari terminus.

I met her once in the hallway. She’s elderly, but quite sprightly, and chirpy. Much like my neighbor, her grand-daughter.

Grandma is jovial, and seems like fun. Heck, she even offers me a portion of the gifts she brought. Just bananas, but, still……

Well, a week runs by. Grandma spends a lot of time on the beach. Perhaps it’s the cold from the water, or the constant shore winds, but she caught a severe cold.

She died.

Me: Wait, Kwalanda, slow down. What did you say?

Him: She died, right there on her bed in their spare bedroom!

Right after her granny kicks the bucket, the girl lets rip that her grandma’s wish was to be buried outside her hut in Nyakemincha, Kisii.

Which is alright, except that my neighbors do not have much in their savings to fund such a burial, especially not in far-off Kisii.

It costs quite a sum to hire a hearse from Mombasa to Kisii.

They turned to me for help. I had to give them all I could spare so they could hire a private van to transport their grandmother back to Kisii.

Kwalanda ends that story with a forlorn, mournful look.

A few days later, I learn that he neither lives in Likoni, nor does he have Kisii neighbors. He’s just skipping paying his debts.

After a somewhat funny confrontation at work, over tea break, Kwalanda is nailed. He makes a money transfer on his phone from his Co-op Bank account via the MCo-op Cash App to my account.
