I Was Being Paid Ksh175 For A Sweeping Job- Dj Demakufu

Kenya’s ‘Street King’ Disc Jockey Demakufu has revealed his success journey and the struggles he underwent before landing a job in Homeboyz. The entertainer had previously struggled to get a descent job. Demakufu claims his passion for becoming a DJ was triggered when he reached high school and was inspired by the mixes that were being played in school at that time.

After finishing High School, he was taken for a computer course and driving lessons, after which he said they weren’t enough to help him secure a job.

The DJ reveals that it reached a point where his dad chased him away from home. This forced him to sleep with his friend. His first job was a sweeping job at a supplying company, where he was being paid Kshs 175 per day.

He however said that his dad also helped him throughout his journey. He bought him his first mixer at Kshs 110,000 but was reluctant to give it to him.

”Nimebuy mixer, ata hataki kunipea mixer yenyewe. Anataka kubaki nayo kwa ofisi.”

The DJ also says that he started off with his name as ‘DJ Firstborn’ before using his current one. After some time, his mixes went viral in most Nairobi areas. That’s when he started gaining popularity. After receiving some calls, Demakufu finally landed his current job at Homeboyz Radio.

His journey is an inspiration that most millennials can emulate. His advice to upcoming DJ’s and artists- good things take time.
