Christmas Blues: Father-in-Law’s Text Message That Broke My Heart

I married the firstborn in a huge family. My wife is often the de facto parent. The uncelebrated head of a chaotic chain of command.

Always, she’s either an emissary of good tidings or a benevolent, tireless mediator when conflicts arise between her siblings and their folks.

Firstborns deserve an automatic spot in heaven.

Beginning of December, she received a text message from her father. The old man rarely texts – or calls. He’d often delegate such minor roles to my mother-in-law.

If he did, chineke – the mountain has shifted. Or, about to shift.

“Hello Mama. I hope the city is kind to you all. Kindly tell everyone not to bring us any Christmas gifts this year. Kujeni tu tupige sherehe mama.

‘Everyone’ meant my wife’s six siblings, and their children. Tradition over the years meant a family get-together over Christmas season.

Like clockwork, we’d descend on the village laden with gifts and rental cars. A desperate attempt at redemption for missing out for most of the year.

I recalled random conversations with my father-in-law. After every trip, old man’s remarks branded it all as ‘unnecessary’.

At the time, I thought it was a modest reference to a stable retirement. I was wrong.

The text was a cryptic message. They loved gifts, sure – but, not the kind we brought!

Like, of what need are decorative things? They no longer needed, or had space to display fancy, Chinese crockery!

A dozen grandkids would bring food. Boxes of roast ham, goat ribs and even pizza! Poor parents would be tired of meat and processed foods in a few days.

Crates of fruit arrived once. Mzee held an orange with a grocer sticker on it, and said:

“If this wasn’t so perfectly colored orange, I’d swear it came from our shamba”.

We had laughed it off as a joke, and missed the message. They had an orchard, for crying out loud!

A granddaughter would bring Grandma bouquets of flowers. They made her sneeze, so she’d lock them up in a spare bedroom till they died so she could throw them out.

We need to do different gifting this year.

While elderly parents can be picky, get something they like, or actually need. A thoughtful gift need not be large, or expensive.

I have some suggestions.

Perhaps, pay off one of their bills for a few months in advance. That’s great. It spares a bit of their own money to spoil themselves.

Or, why not take them shopping? That’s a treat – have mum pick groceries and pay it off. Or, treat your father to a jersey of his favorite football team.

Do they like a drink on their patio to watch the sun set? Get a bottle of something premium.

I logged online and paid an annual subscription for my father-in-law’s favorite magazines, and daily newspapers.

The old man’s favorite hobby is filling cryptic crosswords – I bought a 365-page puzzle booklet. A crossword puzzle a day, year round. I paid it all easily, with my Co-op Bank ATM card.

I saw once saw mother-in-law knit, by the fireplace. I asked my wife if we could buy her some knitting thread.

No, she says. She lost interest in that hobby.

“All she does is nag my dad, all day on Dolby Surround……”

I burst out laughing.

As you prepare to travel upcountry and other places for the festivities, there’s no need to carry cash around. That’s risky, and you’ll be more likely to spend on unnecessary stuff.

A Co-op Bank ATM Card or payment via MCo-op Cash App gives access to fast and secure payments at no extra cost.

Anything from fuel to travel and accommodation bookings or grocery shopping treats – anything is possible.

Merry Christmas. Bring thoughtful gifts!

For a business owner, how does using the E-commerce solution from Co-op Bank help grow a business?

The ravaging Covid-19 pandemic has dictated a rather drastic change to our livelihoods if we have to check its spread.

The business owners have had to embrace cashless means of payments, to lower their risk levels presented by use of hard cash. There’s need, therefore, for a reliable E-commerce platform.

To address that concern, The Co-operative Bank has heavily invested in E-commerce to guarantee safety and quick flow of payments to their clients – Merchants and their customers.

Here’s a preview of various advantages a merchant enjoys:

  1. Convenience to their customers consequently an increase in sales: Customers do not need to be physically present. Payments can be transacted at any time from any location in the world and delivery is done.
  2. Outstanding real-time processing speed with average authorisation response times typically below 2 seconds: quicker service delivery as payments reflect instantly.
  3. A customer enjoys a variety of card: International VISA credit and debit cards, pre-paid cards – which doubles safety and convenience on both ends.
  4. There’s more sales, as E-commerce allows flexibility for multiple currencies – Kes, USD, GBP and Euro
  5. The E-commerce solution gives unparalleled processing scalability and security – as it’s instant, and avoids the risks fraught with using hard cash.

How to avoid landlord drama during the festive season

Some landlords can be a nightmare and you should be wary of them now that the festive season is around the corner because quite a number of them won’t think twice before adding a huge padlock on your door.

If you ask me, there’s nothing worse than being locked out of your house in December. It just ruins your mood and it is likely that you won’t even enjoy Christmas or New Year’s.

December is only two days away and that means that bills are about to start piling up. From rent, electricity, garbage, internet, insurance, you name it.

To add to that, you still have to set aside some money to make merry because it is the festive season after all. Even if you had planned on how you would spend your money, you might still find yourself in a tight financial spot.

This is where Co-op Bank comes in, to give you that financial boost that you desperately need or else you’d have to fake an out-of-town vacation or default on your rent.

You can get an instant loan at friendly interest rates on the MCo-op Cash app and relieve yourself from the pressure that comes with the festive season, including having run-ins with your landlord for not paying your rent.

To access the loan, you need to be a Co-op Bank customer and install the MCo-op Cash application from Google Play Store or the iOS App Store.

After signing up, you can borrow anything between KSh. 1000 and a maximum of KSh. 200,000. For businesses, the limit is KSh. 500,000.

There you go. That’s how you avoid landlord drama and enjoy yourself during the festive season. Happy holidays!

An Interestingly Simple but Puzzling Lesson on the Mechanics of Money

In my high school days, I met a very calm, patient lady. She was my languages teacher. She rocked black, horn-rimmed glasses, and had an eternal flowered scarf on her neck, and various brooches. I think she was pretty wise – she could look intently at a student – such piercing eyes, and give you a prediction of your career future.

Mrs. Apollo Agnes. She later left teaching and joined Co-Op Bank, for a managerial role.

If by chance she gets to read this, let her know those predictions were oddly accurate. Mostly, she did give positive reviews, but if you got on her nerves, well, her dark side showed. One of my then best friends had her wondering out loud if he would survive a possible gunning down past his 30’s.

Well, he survived, somehow, but he’s serving a stint at Kamiti Prison for handling stolen goods.

In her eyes, I was already a CEO, running a huge company, or at least some NGO, I think. Though her endorsement wasn’t exactly maternal, as I was a perennial bust in almost every crime – Noise Makers List, Monto List, Missed Morning Preps List, Sold School Piglets List, etc.

Every morning at assembly, she would be like, “….Munyeki and Company, please dress forward….” She made me CEO in Form Two North. Good enough. If only she had said I would be a billionaire……..

Anyways, I owe my elder brother, Joe, a lot in teaching me ways of the world. Especially economics, and how the money in the world moves. He had a degree in economics, and would really be irritating when he delved into the folds and crannies of his passion.

However, one New Year’s Eve, he showed me firsthand the mechanics of money, as he called it. It was his first year of employment, and that holiday was his first. In the village, partying starts just after Jamhuri Day, in December. It’s a fortnight of sin and debauchery. It’s the season to be merry, and do idiotic stuff. Joe wanted to treat his village crew – and he did.

Perhaps, too much. He ran out of cash just before New Year’s Eve.

January brings with it a load of blues, and responsibilities. Besides school fees for a few cousins he had drunkenly pledged to support, he needed to travel back to Mombasa. He didn’t seem fazed at all by his predicament, though I knew he was broke.

He had always banked with Co-Op Bank, and he had the mCo-Op Cash App. Joe coolly whips out his phone over breakfast on New Year’s Day, and takes a salary loan. That defined cool. Takes just a few minutes. But the best was yet to happen: his crash course on the mechanics of money.

This was his last day in the village. He takes me to town, which is a few miles off. He wants to spend his last day with me – his way of clearing his guilt – I had hardly seen him over the holiday. At the bus stage, he makes a withdrawal at an M-Pesa outlet, straight from his mCo-op Cash App. Convenient.

After a few drinks, Joe gets into his philosophical mood and starts to lecture me. He creates a pretty confusing make-believe tale, on the movement of the money.

Let’s start with the bank lending him money via mCo-op Cash App.

We make for Cool Breeze Lodge. He inquires of any vacant rooms, and the lady at the counter nods. Joe slaps 2k on the counter, and without waiting for anyone, sprints up the stairs to check the rooms on the upper floor. He’s a regular, I see.

The lady at the counter takes the 2k, and goes out the main door towards the butchery next door. She pays the butcher at Ng’ang’a And Son’s Butchery 2k for meat supplied earlier in the day. She goes back. Am at the counter, still. She smiles at me, but I can see she doesn’t have the money.

Meanwhile, Ng’ang’a – the butcher – goes out of his premises and crosses the road. He finds a farmer who supplies him with fresh meat, he had a remaining bill unpaid, and so he pays him 2k. He then strolls back to his butchery.

The farmer abandons the Ojuok game he was playing against an old friend. He had been losing, anyways. Usually, he wins, but he had been distracted by a debt he had at the local Waigwa Agro Vet Store, a few meters away. He walks to the store and hands over the same 2k. He then walks back.

I am still at the counter. What’s taking Joe so long upstairs?

In a few minutes, I see a man in a white dust coat walk up to the counter. It’s Waigwa, the vet. He has had a running bill at this lounge, when he had treated his friends to a few drinks and roast goat meat. He hands over 2k. After a few moments of chit chat with the counter lady, he walks out.

The lady looks at the notes, bemusedly, and places them on the counter.

Almost as if on cue, Joe appears from the stairs.

Hizo rooms zenu ni chafu” He tells the lady. “Wacha tutajipanga kwingine”.

He picks up the 2k notes from the counter. We walk out.

“That’s how money works, Munyeki.” Joe tells me, over the rim of his glass. “My 2k makes everyone happy, and I still got to leave with it”.

What have I learnt? That puzzle still haunts me to date.

Yes, it’s that simple. What’s even more is that the loans have a one-off fee of 8% of the amount that you have borrowed.

You can also access the service by downloading the MCo-op Cash app from Google Play Store or the iOS App Store. Next time you find yourself in a tight financial spot, you know where to turn.

Reasons why the MCo-op Cash app is the best first resort when you’re in a tight fix

When you are in a tight financial spot, you can feel like you are drowning. You struggle to clear your child’s school fees and before the end of the day, you receive a text from your internet service provider that bill is due. When you get home, you are plunged into darkness because you forgot to buy electricity tokens.

When you look at the calendar, it dawns on you that pay day is still far away so you are forced to cut down costs. Soon enough, you realize that cutting expenses won’t work, you need things like electricity to get around, so you decide to reach out to some friends to bail you out.

Unfortunately, your friends inform you that their hands are tied so they can’t help you even if they wanted to. When you are on the verge of giving up, you remember the MCo-op Cash salary loan adverts that you have been seeing on TV and social media.

You decide to give it a try since you’ve heard so many good things about the MCo-op Cash app. It exceeds your expectations when you use it for the first time. After using it for a while, you can attest that it’s the best first resort when your money is that tight because of many reasons including;

1. High loan limit – the MCo-op cash salary loan allows you to apply for up to KSh. 200,000 i.e. you can access 1.5 times of your net salary. For example, if your net salary is KSh. 30,000, you can apply for up to KSh. 45,000. The higher your salary, the higher the loan limit.

2. Flexible repayment schedule – you can pay the loan at once in one instalment or spread it over three months and pay a small part of it every month. i.e. if you owe 45,000, you can pay it in 3 monthly instalments of KSh. 15,000.

3. Low interest rate – the loan has a one-off fee of 8% of the amount that you have requested for. The interest is deducted from the loan before the money is deposited into your MCo-op cash account.

4. Instant crediting to your account – when your loan is approved it’s deposited into your MCo-op cash account instantly. This means that you can access the funds immediately and get rid of the expense that has been bugging you.

5. It’s hassle-free – all you need to do is to register for MCo-op Cash, which is free of charge, and link your salary account at the branch that is closest to you. After this, you are all set to apply for a loan. You don’t need approvals from your employer or guarantors.

The next time you find yourself in a tight spot,  remember MCo-op Cash salary loan has your back. You can access the service dialling *667# on your phone or downloading the app from Google Play Store or the iOS App Store.

Ningechonga viazi on Valentine’s Day but the MCo-op Cash app saved me big time, here’s how

I almost got dumped on Valentine’s Day! Right now, I’d be looking back at the good old days when I had a girlfriend and took it for granted. Luckily, a timely idea saved my relationship. Sijui ningeambia watu nini!

On the morning of Valentines, I received a text from bae. It was around 10 am. She wanted to know what I had planned for us that evening.

After reading her message, it then dawned on me that it was actually Valentine’s Day and I was supposed to pull off a romantic gesture to show bae that I appreciate her.

Truth is I had nothing in mind. I thought it was just an ordinary day. I had not even noticed that most people in the office were in red outfits. Knowing too well that she might dump me for ‘simply’ forgetting that it was Valentine’s Day, I decided to play it cool.

“I got this. If I tell you what I’ve planned then it won’t be a surprise, will it?” I texted her back. Minutes later, she replied “Okay then. I can’t wait.”

I started panicking almost immediately there’s nothing worse than looking forward to something then ending up with disappointment.

As I went about my day I thought of several ways to surprise her but none of them seemed practical because I was too broke. Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of February and who has money kati kati ya mwezi? Surely.

I grabbed my notebook and calculated the cost of taking her out that evening. The figure came to KSh. 5700, this included a bouquet of flowers, chocolates, dinner for two at her favourite eatery, skating, cab fare and airtime to make calls here and there.

I started looking for the money after drawing my budget. I knew too well that my friends were also hanging on to their last coins. This meant that they weren’t able to bail me out even if they wanted to. I explored other options. Not only were loan limits extremely low, the interest rates were also too high.

When I was on the verge of giving up and coming clean to bae, I remembered that I have access to MCo-op Cash loans as a Co-operative Bank customer.

I dialled *667#, entered my pin, selected (8) Loan option, then I selected (2) and keyed in the amount that I wanted to borrow which was KSh. 6000.

In a matter of the seconds, my MCo-op Cash salary loan had been processed and deposited into my MCo-op Cash account. I could finally relax and wait to surprise bae in the evening. The best part was that she won’t have a clue of what I went through.

Optionally, you can install the MCo-op Cash app from Google Play Store or the iOS App Store. After signing up, you can borrow a salary advance loan of any amount between KSh. 1000 and KSh. 200,000. For businesses, the maximum limit is KSh 500,000.

Now that I am aware of the MCo-op Cash loan, I’m already planning a birthday surprise for her. This time around, I am going all out!

How to fulfil bae’s Valentine’s Day dream using the MCo-op Cash app

Valentine’s Day is upon us! While some people will go out of their way to surprise their loved ones with grandiose gifts, others will make do with simple gestures such as boat rides at Uhuru Park and call it a day. After all, it’s the thought that counts right?

Even if you are not the romantic type, you might find yourself in an awkward situation if you don’t do something unique to show your partner that you appreciate the role that he/she plays in your life.

Truth is, no one, whether they are in a relationship or not, is ready to face the fact that they didn’t cross someone’s mind on Valentine’s Day, especially in this day and age when all you have to do is log into social media to see how your peers were dining in 5-star hotels, vacationing, jetsetting and what have you.

Planning is vital if you want to see to it that what you had thought of as the perfect surprise for your significant other comes to life.

Another important aspect is one’s financial resources. Let’s face it, of what good is a plan when you are penniless?

More often than not, you will face one of these financial hurdles; it’s either you have no money at all or you need a small top up on the amount that you already have.

That is where MCo-op Cash comes in, to give you that timely financial boost that you really need, or else you would have to lie about a non-existent out-of-town trip or fake your kidnapping at worst, because, who’s ready to face their significant other and inform them that they did not plan anything? Definitely not me.

You can get an instant loan at friendly interest rates on the MCo-op Cash app and relieve yourself from the unnecessary pressure that comes with Valentine’s Day.

To access the loan facility, you need to be a Co-op Bank customer and install the MCo-op Cash application from Google Play Store or the iOS App Store.

After signing up, you can borrow from KSh. 1000 to a maximum of KSh. 200,000. For businesses, the maximum limit is KSh 500,000.

The ball is now on your court, treat your bae to a surprise that they will remember for a lifetime this Valentine’s Day!
