Susumila comes clean on being ‘The Mombasa Cartel’ and his close ties with Governor Hassan Joho (Video)

Prominent Mombasa-based artiste, Susumila has finally come out to address accusations of using black magic and dark power to bag major gigs in Mombasa and manipulating the Governor on which Coastal artiste to support.

Soon after Hassan Joho took political office around 2013, he appointed Susumila as one of his ambassadors, something that rose his celebrity status in the Coastal town and that has since seen the artist bag positions of power and closely linked to the Mombasa Governor.

His power saw most of his music get financed by the politician as other artistes came out to claim he was ‘The Mombasa Cartel’ blocking their deals with Governor 001. During his interview with Jalang’o, the artiste finally addressed the claims.

Susumila responds

The father of 4 who named his last child after the Governor, blasted Mombasa artistes for being too ungrateful and always lamenting even when someone helps them out. According to him, he has worked with so many creatives even behind the scenes and that is all that matters.

Jalang’o and Susumila

Speaking of being the one who handles cheques dished out by Joho to support Mombasa artistes, Susumila stated;

There is a lot that happens behind the scenes so I am usually the one given the money among other persons, because we are the ones who know what happens on the ground. We are the ones to decide which director or production crew an artiste will work with but the artistes become very choosy and that is the problem.

Having co-founded the popular 001 music record label, Susumila admitted that Joho had funded, through him, a couple of music projects by several artistes including Willy Paul, Ally B, Kelechi, Nadia Mukami, Masauti among others.

Joho works with so many artistes so what he does is to give us the money, then we decide from there.

The Swahili artiste seemed to agree with Jalang’o that there are barriers put by these cartels to prevent other artistes from accessing Governor Joho directly and that they are the only connection to get to him.

We are the eye of the Governor and his direct link, implied Susumila.

Why Coastal music barely gets any nationwide attention

Very few people cared about Coastal music until recently when Masauti, Otile Brown, Dogo Richie, Sudi Boy, Susumila, Chikuzee and the likes emerged on the music scene.

Artists from the Coast operated in a cocoon for a long time so much so that very few people in the other parts of the country had a clue who they were but have you ever wondered why?

Have you ever asked yourself why the artists and their songs barely get any nationwide attention? Well, I have some pointers as to why.

Masauti

Firstly, there’s the obvious fact that almost all top media houses are based in Nairobi. This means that if an artist from the Coast has a new song, then he or she has to travel to the capital city to promote it.

You could argue that artists don’t need the mainstream media because we are in the digital age but that’s a wrong perception. We live in a third world country, TV and radio will always be relevant.

Secondly, artists from the Coast are not as aggressive as their counterparts in Nairobi. I’m sure you have also heard that people from Mombasa take things slowly, the same applies to the artists.

They take so long to release a song and when they release it they don’t even bother to promote it because they are not  agile. That’s just it.

The last reason is claims of sorcery. This might sound funny but it is real in the Coast. Artists are always blaming their counterparts of bewitching them and curtailing their growth.

Sometime last year, Dogo Richie released a song dubbed Mziki Majanga in which he claimed that fellow musicians used juju on him so that he does not grow.

Dogo Richie

Among those mentioned in the song were; Fat S, Susumila, Nyota Ndogo, Chikuzee, Bizzy K, Ally B and Bawazir.

Interestingly, a few months later, during a radio interview, Dogo Richie revealed that his voice vanishes when he is in studio but he sounds heavenly when he’s at home.

According to him, the aforementioned artists had revenged on him for calling them out.

The bottom line is that Coastal music is a circus, I have no apologies for saying this. Knowing all this, I’m even surprised that some of the are making it big in the national stage.

Susumila makes a comeback in new jam “Kila Mtu”

When I wrote about Susumila’s struggle in the music industry, this was just about it. Trying so hard to fit in the very fast changing industry is really dragging his music down the mud.

Few weeks on Susumila is back on the music scene with a new jam dubbed “Kila Mtu”.

Kila Mtu

The song is a reflection of the Kenya’s  political temperatures. In the Song he highlights the plight of the common  mwananchi with the now leadership.

In the first line he says,Kila mtu atauchukua mzigo wake mwenyewe. This to mean that everyone has a responsibility at the end of the day and will be judged accordingly.

In his first, stanza he raps about the corruption state and tribalism that the country is wallowing in. Sadly the song paints a factual picture of the state of the nation.

Karibu Kenya, nchi ya kitu kidogo

Karibu Kenya, nchi ya wapenda hongo

Nchi ya wezi, wafujaji wa pesa

Nchi ya mtu wetu, nchi ya ukabila………………

He goes on to highlight the plight of the Kenyan Health sector that is being crippled by the day.The bad state of maternity hospitals a situation that is cupped by scandals in every year.

Further, he even calls out the government officials and their thievery.

“Wabunge, waizi Ma MCA, waizi Ma Senetor, waizi Ma Governor, waizi”
True to his word, the main stream media highlights these themes in the song on a daily basis that it is even depressing to watch the news.

Message

For a come back Susumila outdid himself in this jam.Considering the success of his previous album that revolved  around such topics this could be a necessary angle for his music career.

Also considering how artists seems to be ignoring this state of the nation i feel that Susumila has done a good  job to campaign against the rogue government officials that are driven by greed and not servant leadership.

The song was directed by Ricky Bekko. Generally it was more of a patriotism song and for rating I will give it a 7/10 rating.

Watch and tell us what you think.

Coastal artists need to leave Mombasa to sell their music

Am sure you have noticed the slow growth of coastal artists. Have you tried asking yourself why? It is common sense that there is market for their work in the wider Kenya. Some have been in the industry for the longest time but nothing comes out.

I’d go back to when some of us were grown back in the days. I can confirm that few have made it out here. Look at young talents like Dazalah, this guy is a talented Bongo artist but he does not even hit 100k likes on youtube.

Could it be that they are lazy or just not interested? You know passion is one thing that will drive you to do what you want. Is there no motivation? There is this time that Akothee said that Kenyan artists need to market their songs. I totally agree with her on this.

Susumila has been in the industry for quit sometime and despite this he has not yet hacked the industry.

You will not see these artists looking for gigs outside Mombasa and it’s surrounding. Who bewitched them? These people need to look for fans outside their surrounding.

We will all keep singing the anthem, play Kenyan music but we will not succeed. Reasons being that there is pride and maybe fear from the industry. Gone are the days when Nyota Ndogo was sang all over, Where did she even go?

Nyota Ndogo. pioneer of Taarab Music. No longer selling

Hating on Coastal Artist?

I know some people will rush to argue with me that am hating on coastal artists but come to think of it this way.. Why are Tanzanian Bongo artists dominating our market as if we do not have our own artists? This is because Tanzanian artists have discovered that they can hack the market. What are these people still doing in coast?

I would like someone to show me how many Kenyan coast artists are having gigs outside Mombasa over the weekend.

We will argue about this for a century, but the truth be said, coastal artists need to wake up and sell their work.

Gone are the days when people would seat and listen to radio’s. No one will come looking for you, you need that extra effort. They also need to make use of their social media accounts. But you’ll come to realize that they also have no followers.

All in all coastal artists need to tour Kenya. Period.

I would also want to know what happened to groups like Wasojali Band. Where did they go? They were a promising group but only few can tell about them.

Wasojali Band team; Jirani wanifata fata kwa nini

Inama Inuka; Susumila is back featuring Petra

Inama Inuka is Susumila’s new track featuring Petra. Susumila is a Kenyan Coastal based artist while Petra is a Seychelles nationality based in Kenya. The duo has done a great collaboration leaving most of their fans amazed. Petra’s voice introduces the song. This lad is very flexible, look at her moves as she sings the first verse. Inama Inuka is a love song. The audio was produced bt Teknixx and the video by Kevin Bosco Jnr.  Inama is simply bending and inuka means rising.  The song has been done mostly in Swahili and a few words in English.

Petra does most of her verses in English and it comes out nicely. The flow is amazing; I like this verse; “Me ndio nafanya hawa maboy wanadata Madem na machali wote pia wote wanataka Haraka haraka  Najua waipenda sana nikichora saba Baby songa hapa  Najua waipenda sana nikichora saba” This verse is good. Kuchora saba tu, the lady in this case is driving men crazy and she wanna please the guy. The verse shows creativity of the duo.

The Jamaican style too didn’t fail; “Demand him haffi case case You are de ting pon me My man have it on mi wishlist”. Petra raps so well bring out the rapper in her.

On his side Susumila does not dissapoint, he has put enough energy in this song. He has done the bridge and it is so good. The repetition of the bridge brings out the title ‘Inama Inuka’ out and gives the song clear understanding. For instance; “Unavyo inama, unavyo inuka(weee) Unanifanya me nameza mate Unavyo inama, unavyo inuka(weee) Unanifanya mpaka me nidate”. It means that the way the lady bends over and rises makes the dude salivate.

Looking at the lyrics, the target audience is the young people. This song can be played anywhere but mostly it would do good in a club, especially when people are celebrating or lovers having having. I like how the voices of Susumila and Petra flow. It is a good collabo. Rating the song at 8/10.

Susumila planning to release a song praising ‘Jini’s’ for giving him fame and wealth? (Details)

Susumila is not a new name in the entertainment industry. In fact he is one of the most talented singers we have come to see from coast and judging from how his previous songs have done in the past – we are certain he is going far.

There are however new reports indicating that the singer is planning to drop a new song in 2 weeks where he is heard praising the illuminati cult for his wealth and fame.

Susumila

The song dubbed Tawire has left bloggers from coast talking since ‘Tawire’ is apparently a phrase commonly used by witch doctors. Apparently he goes on to use words like ‘Subihan’ which are names used to describe ghosts.

In the song he apparently praises the cult for helping him get a car, beautiful women, and fame.

However, speaking during a recent interview the artist brushed off the claims saying;

“I work hard boss, silali nahangaika. Kama umechunguza I’m very consistent in my work, I push my music alot kwa sababu ndio njia pekee inayolipa bills zangu. Hata vitabu vya dini vinasema asiyefanya kazi asile,”

Susumila

His 5 rings have also been associated with the cult but he continues to insist that he is not in any cult.
