The Vanessa Chettle story should be a warning to other socialites

Vanessa Chettle resurfaced afew days back and all she has done is she returned to remind us the sad tale of what awaits ninety per cent of all Kenyan socialites after the fame has subsided and age has taken a toll on their bodies and they can no longer garner even an iota of the attention they are used to.

In her prime, she was one of the most popular celebrity socialites because she was an attractive nubile young lass. She was what most other socialites pretend to be; naturally alluring and aesthetically pleasing.

But soon enough, the attention and fame got to her head. Vanessa Chettle became a combative lady who was no longer a joy to be around and when she was a cast member on the show Nairobi Diaries, she would always get into physical altercations and she eventually got arrested for the same.

But when did the rain start beating her? To understand that, you need to walk a mile in her shoes but avoid the trapping of the emotional rollercoaster she clearly got stuck on. She is an attractive woman and as a result, men bent over backwards to accommodate her. She got to experience life courtesy of the pretty girl privilege and it was a blast.

All of a sudden, she started dating some boy and as these things sometimes go, she fell pregnant. When that happened, her allure to many of her fans who are simply thirsty men was over. And now Vanessa Chettle struggled to get to the heights of social life that she had previously enjoyed and that can take a toll on anyone’s mind.

And so we watched her spiral out of control. She was now a mother but we were treated to videos and photos of her partying and smoking bhangi. She was a mother whose social media showed us a glimpse into the world of a woman fighting to cling on to her last hurrah.

And then like a whisper, she was gone. She slinked back home to her parents in Eldoret and her social media went silent for a time. When she reemerged, she was dating a DJ from her home county and soon enough, she was pregnant again.

This time, however, things seemed different. She seemed grounded. Vanessa Chettle seemed like she was happy with her new man and more stable. Then she revealed she was pregnant and looking forward to starting her new chapter of life with her man -then nothing.

Now she is back and she looks worse for wear. And her man is nowhere in sight. But once again, as if this is a rerun of a bad TV show, she is back to posting photos of herself smoking bhangi. And at this point, we have to step back and realize that this is what you should expect from a failed socialite. One who doesn’t have friends who are honest with her. One who doesn’t realize that her old life has moved on and left her behind. She is a socialite who doesn’t realize entertainment has moved on to newer, hotter socialites and she is last weeks news.

We are seeing a phenomenon at play. Sigmund Freud would have given his arm and one gonad to be able to study this -the effect of social media after it has built up a socialite and given a steady supply of dopamine and serotonin to the point Vanessa Chettle (I suspect) became addicted to the highs she was provided and then she lost it all. It is brutal.

But what is a failed socialite to do? She can only grin and bear it, hoping we cannot see the pain in her eyes and while any intelligent socialite would be well advised to study Vanessa Chettle and learn from her, we are only going to continue seeing these socialites like Shakilla come onto the scene and then fall off and repeat the cycle.
