Were they or were they not having sex? Police killing of woman at City Park puzzles Kenyans

Administration Police officers William Chirchir from Makadara Police Station and Godfrey Kirui from Industrial Area Police Station fired 15 bullets into the a black Toyota Fielder parked at City Park killing 46-year-old Janet Wangui Waiyaki and injuring Bernard Chege, 26.

The official police statement says that the two officers knocked on the car’s tinted windows but there was no response, and all of a sudden the vehicle sped off towards the road prompting the officers to open fire.

The report further says that the car stopped after the shooting, and that two occupants Bernard Chege and Wangui Waiyaki were found half naked (implying they were having sex).

The two were taken to Avenue Hospital where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival and the man is being treated. Their vehicle was towed to Parklands Police Station.

Unanswered questions

Kenyans suspect foul play in the police shooting, there are so many things that don’t add up. What were the two officers, from Makadara Police Station and from Industrial Area Police Station, doing at City Park yet the area clearly falls under the jurisdiction of Parklands Police Station?

Why didn’t they shoot the car’s tyres if they wanted to stop it? Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) should get to the bottom of this incident.
