Kenyans seem to have a love-hate relationship with Elsa Majimbo. We love her jokes and content but we cannot stand her. And this is something that has piqued my interest in the matter for quite some time now.

And rather than waste your time with a long-winded explanation of what happened, I will jump right into it. And we will start with the fact that a lot of Kenyans can see that she took Ronoh’s schtick and ran with it.

What I mean by that is before Elsa Majimbo, there was Ronoh. And she was brilliant before her personal demons stole her thunder and she lost all her focus. And in the period between her fighting her demons and trying to regain control of the wagon, Majimbo had run with her shtick.

But that isn’t really an issue is it? Not as big a deal as the fact that she had the audacity to succeed after Kenyans had written her off. And there is nothing that angers middle-class Kenyans quite like this one fact.

Kenyans are accustomed to cancelling individuals. And they can ruin a person’s career. Just ask Shaffie Weru or Joe Mfalme what happened to their jobs at Kiss 100 when feminists decided to victimize them for sharing perfectly logical opinions.

The comedian however, refused to remain cancelled. The brilliant young lady decided to instead focus on a different audience: South Africans and the rest of Africa. And the world came calling to embrace and celebrate her.

This left egg on the faces of Kenya’s sanctimonious twitter army. She had not just escaped their checkmate but she had turned the gme completely on its head and was flourishing while at it.

And, this is why Kenyans do not like her. Because she had the audacity to turn her own back at her detractors and still go on to succeed. Elsa Majimbo is the one thing Kenya’s middle class detest.
