Kenyan Artists Paid Over 1,000,000

The Kenyan music scene is growing rapidly with new innovative and creative initiatives. A few new distribution services took off in 2013, on of them, Mdundo.com, is today announcing that they’ve paid more than 1 million Kenyan Shillings to Kenyan artists and producers since they started in December 2012.

The Head of Music at Mdundo.com, Thiru Mungai, imagines that this figure is only the beginning, “Mdundo is a small brand in Kenya reaching only a small share of the market. It will probably take the whole of 2014 before we reach a significant number of fans and start making a financial impact for the content creators. I believe that our service will prove a lot more generous in 2014 if our growth continues”.

Mdundo’s CEO, Martin Nielsen, adds “We’ve managed to pay content creators 5-10 ksh per download in 2013 which is significantly higher than any other music distributors around. This doesn’t mean that we can’t do better, the market is huge and we are facing an industry where piracy is accounting for the biggest market share”.

Mdundo is aiming to make it easier to download local music and fans can download any new song for free from mdundo.com or buy access to all the songs in 1 month for only 100ksh.

Rabbit Kaka Sungura released his newest album “Before The Success, Success Begins Now” exclusively on Mdundo.com: “It’s easy for me to follow my downloads from my artist dashboard. When I release on Mdundo easy for my fans to get my music legally”.
