Of Promoters Scamming Artists

So what exactly is with the disconnect between Kenyan artists and Kenyan event organizers? Why are promoters pulling Italian jobs on Kenyan celebs?!

Of late, the Kenyan entertainment scene has been rocked by allegations made by some of our most prolific artists (M.O.G, Big Pin, Collo ad infinitum) accusing a Dubai based promoter, a Mr. Hassan Wazir, of taking them for a ride. The dust is yet to settle on that issue so for now i shall circumvent that topic but i’ll simply ask, “Why don’t promoters and artists seem to get along”?

For a while now, we’ve been hearing stories of cancelled shows, disappointed fans &angry artists and when the stories finally filter to us, they inevitably lay the blame squarely at the promoters feet. Stories of promoters doing false advertising and using top billing artists names to bring in the crowds only for the people to be sorely disappointed when they realise that their favourite artists aren’t performing.

Understandably, the artists get pissed because when complaints are aired by the fans, they don’t mention the promoters but rather vent out their anger at the artists thus hurting their images.

And how many of us have had it up to here *touching my temple* with all the stories of celebs handing promoters beat downs for not paying them their dues? A story involving Abbass Kubaff and a promoter out in Eldoret back in 2010. Although the rapper kept it civil, the fact still remains that the promoter ran away with his bank. And the complaints go on& on& on.
Promoters over to you, let me know if i’ve been unfair given that from what i’ve had, you’re to blame…
