Audience left in awe by South Africa’s first gay choir

Mzansi Gay Choir (MGC), dazzled music lovers on Friday night, marking the end of Pride Month.

The choir is the first of its kind in South Africa.

They performed at the Night of Divas at the Bassline in Newtown, sharing the stage with Kelly Khumalo, Brenda Mtambo, Wonder Baloyi and Amstel.

MGC, which was formed last year, entertained the audience with songs by Lebo Mathosa, Brenda Fassie, Sipho Mabuse and Michael Jackson.

“We staged this event to celebrate Pride Month. The event is a build up to the annual feather awards that will take place in a few weeks time,” the event organizer said.

The choir members are mentored and vocally trained by Mtambo. It took them two weeks to prepare Friday’s performance.

“The songs that we chose push for oneness. They are empowering because of how LGBTI people are treated in our communities. Take songs such as Born This Way by Lady Gaga and Free by Boom Shaka, they make a bold statement,” said Mtambo.

Khumalo, Mtambo and Baloyi joined the choir to sing Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. Their performance left the audience in tears.
