Bra Hugh Masekela’s last wish to be honoured

On Thursday, the late Hugh Masekela’s family addressed the media.

Masekela’s son Sal Masekela and nephew Lesetja Masekela, were joined by Peter Tladi and Dr Yastira Ramdas, in the briefing.

The media address was to let the public know that Masekela would have a private service, as he would have wanted an intimate funeral for close family and friends. The funeral date has however not been set yet.

“The funeral will be for close family and friends, this is what he wanted, anyone who wants to pay their respects can go to the various memorial events.”

Memorial dates

Three public memorial services are set to be held from 26th January. The main service will be on 28th January, at the UJ Soweto Campus.

Future memorials will also be held abroad.

The family thanked South Africans and the world for their messages of support, terming the love they have received as incredible.

” I can say that for my entire family when you get the amount of love and just pure personal stories from people all over the world. The passion with which they loved this man is incredible. We can’t stop marvelling at the passion with which the world continues to celebrate and mourn my father. We say thank you again,” Sal said.

Hugh Masekela died on Tuesday morning, following a long battle with prostrate cancer.
