Caster Semenya breaks national record at the Commonwealth games

Caster Semenya won gold at the Commonwealth games yesterday when she broke the 1,500m national record.

She knocked more than a second off Zola Budd’s national record of 4:01.81 set in 1984, by doing that in 4min 00.71sec.

“I knew when I got to the 800m mark and the time was 2:08.00 and thought I must just wait for the last 250m and I just had to maintain the pace,” she said after her win.

After breaking the record, Semenya has set herself up for a golden Games double.

The two medallists behind her, Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya and Melissa Courtney of Wales also set their personal bests.

Semenya says she will try to break the 35 year old 800m world record, later in the week.
