Queen Elizabeth gives official consent to the Royal Wedding

With less than a week to the much anticipated Royal Wedding, the Queen has finally given her consent. Buckingham Palace announced this by posting an image of a handwritten document where she gave her consent.

It was released exactly a week to the wedding, which is set to take place this Saturday, the 19th of May.

The document features a design that incorporates a red dragon, which is the symbol of Wales. On the right, a rose is featured which is the national flower of the United States.

Consent

The Queen had to give her consent because under the British law, the first six people in line of succession to the throne must obtain her permission. Without her consent therefore, Harry would have been disqualified from the line of succession.

The Instrument of Consent says: “Now know ye that we have consented and do by these presents signify our consent to the contracting of matrimony between our most dearly beloved grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales KCVO and Rachel Meghan Markle.”

Prince Harry was fifth in line, but later moved to being the sixth, when his brother’s son, prince Louis was born last month.
