Senator Mike Sonko Never Stepped Aside As He Announced Early On. This Is What Has Been Happening

It was in early April when President Uhuru Kenyatta tabled an EACC report in parliament, a report that implicated quite a number of government officials including elected leaders in a corruption scandal that has taken this country back in terms of development and service delivery.

Among those in the list was Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko who was adversely mentioned in the list alongside a cabinet secretary.

Sonko subsequently announced that he had stepped aside as Nairobi Senator to pave way for investigations into the saga. This followed president Uhuru’s request that those mentioned pave way for investigations.

But as things are turning out, Sonko never stepped down.

In fact his request to the Senate Assembly Speaker Ekwe Eturo to allow him step aside was turned down. The senate was told yesterday that Sonko is still in office because his request was rejected by the senate speaker.

Here is the letter Sonko wrote to the speaker:

sonko

The speaker declined the request on what he said is a flaw in the law which does not indicate where an elected senator should step aside to allow investigations.
