Halima Namboozo reveals she is a lesbian which lead to her disappear in Australia

Halima Nambozo, a Uganda Table Tennis player has finally come out to defend self on why she vanished in Gold Coast, Australia after representing the country in the Commonwealth games.

Nambozo confirmed that she is a lesbian as she revealed that she started having feelings for fellow girls as young as the age of 14. Her first act was when she lured a female neighbor into the act of making love. She reported the incident to her father who severely beat her and went up to an extent of practicing rituals on her so that the “lesbian demons” could be cast away.

However, her father’s efforts did not bear fruition as she continued with the habit. According to Nambozo, while at school they formed a lesbian group to recruit fellow girls.

With fears of being arrested, Nambozo says she decided to vanish in Gold Coast and seek asylum.Having emerged top seed female table tennis player in Uganda, Nambozo represented the nation at last April’s Commonwealth games but during the games, one of her friends in the group alerted her that the concerned authorities back home had put her on a wanted list after confirming she was a lesbian and arrest was pending on return.

Homosexuality is a criminal offence in Uganda. In 2014, President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti –Homosexuality Act which criminalized acts of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender s. The law stipulated a maximum penalty of life sentence for those found guilty. It was after appeals from the Human Right activists, that the president promised that the law could be revised.

The President of the Uganda Table Association and he confirmed he had heard Nambozo’s story.

“We had heard rumours that Halima was a lesbian. But those were just rumours as our focus was mainly her table tennis development not her sexual orientation. However, it is a different issue now that she has confirmed the rumours,” he said.

On one part Jaggwe was relieved that finally Nambozo’s whereabouts had been traced, but he expressed concern over her career and what her current predicament might mean for her.

“Despite the disappointment she caused to the federation, Halima is one of the best tennis players we have. She needs to be helped so that her career can be revived,” Jjagwe stated.
