Underground Rap!

Kenya is burning with talent in the music scene particularly in the rap genre. Seems as though new rappers come up everyday. If you happen to attend a minor hood event(freestyle battles) in the streets of Nairobi and Mombasa, mostly in the ghettos, you’d be suprised that you haven’t heard their magnificence and ‘sheng’ eloquence in any radio station…

Nevertheless, don’t be too quick to point fingures at the radio stations and studios for negleting these talented youths. As much as we all love music, and hold it dear, we have to accept the fact that if you decide to join the music industry, it is all for the hustle(it’s actually a profession to the business minded rappers like Octopizzo). If it were only for the love of music, I would suggest to the rappers to record their music and enjoy them at home with family and friends.

The MAIN problem that prevents most of our rappers from hitting the radio waves and TVs is the failure to meet “user’s”/fans demands. For any business worldwide, it is with no doubt that success comes with fullfilling the customers wants and needs. In this case, the customers are the great fans.

Currently, it is quite easy to tell that, in Kenya; Kapuka, gospel, Electronic, basically anything that can be danced to, is on high demand. Any song falling under this feel will directly go to the Kenyan Charts. Unfortunately, most of our rappers are more keen to gaining “street cred” rather than appealing to the fans and making money. It is the same rappers that will complain that fans don’t support their own… If I love skinny booty, I definately would not try the chubby.

Despite all that, some rappers like Camp Mulla, Octopizzo, Nonini, Wyre, Bamzi, just to mention a few, know exactly what they’re doing in the music industry, serving the fans, getting their hustle/grind on.

I personally love underground rap because it’s fresh, marvelous, mad, sick rhymes and flow, but the fact is, underground music does not sell squat!

The fans are always right, and they pay for what they want, so give them what they need. That’s just me. For rappers that just don’t get it, holla at Buddha Blaze-The connector with money/business on his mind. He will guide you right.

Watch this Camp Mulla video and you’ll understand real music hustle. Big up to these fast rising crew. A BIG TUUUUUUUNE!!!
